Product Description

Product Description

As the evidence increases that gluten free and casein free diets can really improve symptoms in certain developmental disorders, Jaqui Jackson decided to try it out with her sons Luke, Joe and Ben. Joe has AD/HD, Ben is autistic and Luke has Asperger syndrome. In this book, Luke Jackson writes about his own experiences of being on this diet, "to let other people with AS know they are never too old or too "mild" to embark on this diet. It really can change peoples lives." Luke offers practical advice on topics such as what to expect when beginnng the diet, tips for how to alleviate any initial discomfort, through to advice on how to rearrange the kitchen to aviod cross-contamination. The book includes a section onhow Luke's mother copes with the challenges of cooking for such a large family, along with a selection of Luke's favourite recipes. The book also includes a list of useful addresses and Websites of suppliers coupled with suggestions as to how to find more detailed references

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Luke- Thankyou. I am enlightened!, 9 Jun 2004
By tigar.252 (Derbyshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Having read other books on gf/cf diets and so far being too overwhelmed with the enormity task to know quite where to begin, this book came as a huge relief-there really is life (and edible food)during and beyond implementation day.
As Luke says, he is only twelve years old, but such a wise twelve year old to have written this very detailed, yet humourous book in a painting-by-numbers, beginners sort of way!
I can see the big picture now and plan that beginning with a much clearer idea of how and more importantly why.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource for those on the diet, 24 April 2008
By Research Mom "Author and Avid Reader" (Westport, CT United States) - See all my reviews
Whether the GF/CF diet is valid is now an irrelevant question. Thousands of people use the diet with great success, and this book has helped a lot of young people cope with the demands of it. As a parent of a recovered autistic child I enjoyed reading this book, and have recommended it to teenagers and adults who are struggling with cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and accidental infringements. A previous reviewer may be interested to know that fresh tomatoes contain naturally-occuring glutamates, while MSG contains free glutamic acid. This has been shown in numerous studies to cause migraines and other symptoms. Unless you are a corporate hack with the MSG lobby, whose job is to confuse people by writing negative reviews about books that mention this, you might want to go back to chemistry class.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unscientific, 30 Jul 2003
By A Customer
This book is a combination of interesting insights into autism and ADHD along with unscientific theories about various diets to "cure" autism. The science is sadly lacking in this book. To give one example: Luke says that his brothers react "immediately" after eating foods containing monosodium glutamate, and yet he gives various recipes containing tomatoes (which contain natural glutamate). Also, the book doesn't have an index, making it difficult to use as a reference tool.
