Product Description

Synopsis

Personality Disorder (PD) is one of the most difficult psychological conditions to classify and treat and in the past literature on the subject has tended to neglect the invaluable viewpoint of sufferers themselves. Drawing on extensive research carried out in conjunction with service users, Heather Castillo seeks to emphasise the need for health professionals to reassess their approach to the condition and allows those with PD to effectively define themselves and their illness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, 12 Jul 2003
An interesting account of pioneering research carried out in Essex by a group of people diagnosed as having a personality disorder: worth reading, as it gives the other side of the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and worth a read, 12 Jul 2003
By T. porter (London) - See all my reviews
This book is of interest to those within the field of mental health and details the research carried out in Essex by those who had attracted the diagnosis of personality disorder. It gives a glimpse of life within 'their' world and is definitely worth a read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality research, poorly written., 7 Feb 2003
I would not recommend this book for people wishing to know more about personality disorder nor for those in the field simply because it contains no information about personality disorder. The 'research' encompassed in this novel bears none of the hallmarks of scientific endevour primarily because no controls were carried out. All behaviours, feelings and thought patterns attributed by the author as characteristic of personality disorder could just as well be attributed to people with or without any form of mental illness. I think most of all this book is a disapointment for the service users who gave their time and thoughts and experiences, that they will undoubtdy have no impact on the knowledge which drives the psychiatric establishment.
