4.0 out of 5 stars An important historical collection, 27 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Without the regular harvesting of a wide variety of local, often obscure, sources the kind of historical summary presented in this excellent book can too easily drop from memories of subsequent generations. It's capture, however, ensures the survival of that knowledge and the authors have collected an created an enduring viewpoint of this interesting and crucial part of the development of the countryside as we know it today, albeit focussing on the Peak District. It is well written and easy to read, sprinkled generously with many illustrations and photographs of the features discussed and posesses an excellent Bibliography for those wishing to pursue their own research. I have yet to see a more authoritative work on the topic. My only quibble is that at 187 pages it's a little pricey. It is a must, however, for anyone with a significant interest in the topic.
