Product Description

Product Description

As with English, the French language includes lots of words and pharses which seem to mean the same thing, but which actually have a different meaning. For example, "to know" can be connaitre (to know someone) or savoir (to know something). The student who learns some of these key distinctions will soon progress to fluency. Intended for students with some basic knowledge of French, this book aims to rapidly improve their effectiveness and fluency, by helping them learn and practise these different forms in everyday situations.

From the Publisher

Frankly we simply cannot produce enough of these books. Studymates are proud to publish such a talented writer as Monique Jackman. Ms Jackman is a truly gifted communicator who can clearly explain the intricacies of the language of her homeland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Packed with explanations and examples - a valuable resource, 13 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Although I have a good knowledge of French, this book is invaluable for me. Often it is the simple things that throw me when I'm using French, eg when to use connaître or savoir, when to use emmener or emporter, etc. What is the difference between grand and gros and when should I use jour or journée? There is also a chapter on pronunciation - when to sound the 's' at the end of a word and how the word 'terrible' can have a different meaning according to the intonation you use.

This book is giving me more confidence in using French as I can be sure I am using various words and phrases in the right way.

The book is well-organised with chapters on separate topics. There are also French/English indexes of words. For example, if you wanted to check on how to use ce que, you can quickly find the page from the index. The layout of the book therefore makes it very easy to look up a particular query. You can dip into it and read up on one small section at a time.

The book has provided explanations of many aspects of the French language I wasn't quite sure of - or didn't know! I'm in a French conversation group and I'm going to recommend that everyone buys a copy of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars PC, 25 Mar 2008
By PC (Chichester, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This excellent little book gives practical advice on how the French actually use their language. It is concise, well structured and has hundreds of examples.

Faults? The later chapters appear to have been hurried or cut short to squeeze them in.

Overall it does what the title says and does it well. Thoroughly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much more use than a dictionary, 19 Oct 2009
By S. Taylor (France) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Although the book I got from a reseller was not in very good condition, the reseller immediately apologised, refunded my money and let me keep the book.
Knowing when to use certain words and the context is much easier with a book like this than a dictionary.
This edition I see now is no longer available and there is now 4th (I think) edition out so go for that one. It's worth getting.
