'...Wolves are more than just her [Michelle's] friends - they've helped to make her a millionaire and a global publishing phenomenon'

Review

'...the momentum for this should be considerable' (Jennifer Taylor CHILDREN'S BOOKSELLER )

'...Wolves are more than just her [Michelle's] friends - they've helped to make her a millionaire and a global publishing phenomenon' (Sally Williams DAILY TELEGRAPH )

'...the perfect concoction of action and narrative is what makes the book so attractive. ...Paver has succeeded in producing a first-class story supported by substantial moral messages... unclouded by the present day' (Edward Malnick DAILY TELEGRAPH (Books) 27/8/05 )

'...another gripping, taut adventure in the ancient world' (Anne Johnstone THE HERALD, 3/9/05 )

'This book looks set to outdo the massive success of its predecessor' (Julian Exposito BOOKSELLER CHILDREN'S BUYER'S GUIDE: HIGHLIGHTS )

'...the story grips you like a wolf's jaws and won't let go...Her [Paver's] account of their spiritual beliefs suggests deep anthropological research but feels new-minted when described in her taut, elegant prose. Children, who are often very close to these animist beliefs, will find this imagined world as thrilling as Tolkien's or Pullman's...The climax is superb. With Wolf fighting demons by Torak's side for another four books, wolves have never looked more like a boy's best friend.' (Amanda Craig SATURDAY TIMES 10.09.05 )

'...compelling sequel to Wolf Brother' (FUNDAY TIMES )

'It's a classic plus - boy journeys and sturggles towards truth with faithful animal friend - but so well done, so fully visualised in so few brush strokes and cliche-free.' (Gay Hicyilmaz TES )

'very well researched... and the stunning revelation at the end of the story will leave you unable to wait for the next instalment.' (Fred Heffer (Age 12) UNDERCOVER )

'the author manages to make you feel like you are part of this ancient world. The next installment is out soon. I can't wait.' (Jessica Dyer SUNDAY HERALD )

'spell-binding... The second adventure in Torak's quest to vanquish the terrifying Soul-Eaters dazzles, as Michelle Paver's passion for her story, set in a world of myth and natural magic, shines through in this skilfully woven tale.' (Staff of Waterstone's Middlesbrough TEESIDE EVENING GAZETTE )

'a must read... I adore this series, which packs as much punch as Harry Potter in its feel for Bronze Age hunting and survival.' (Amanda Craig SATURDAY TIMES )

'themes of evil and power are strongly realised and the charming front of evil deepens the authenticity of characterisation. The plot is tightly crafted and the pace of the novel never slackens, escalating towards a dramatic crescendo... Spirit Walker offers profound insights into the human condition... highly recommended.' (Aine Nic Gabhann INIS (CHILDREN'S BOOKS IRELAND) )

'This powerful story about the bond between a boy and a wolf and the battle between good and evil transports the reader not only to Stone Age Northen Europe by the minds of those who lived there.' (Anne Johnstone THE HERALD 10.12.05 )

'guaranteed to have you totally hooked!' (DISNEY BIG TIME )

'Spirit Walker is a thoroughly entertaining read. Fans will not be disapointed.' (SUNDAY JOURNAL (DERRY) 27.11.05 )

'I loved this book because it's really exciting and you always want to read on. It is unputdownable and there's a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter. Every bit as good as Wolf Brother but it's much scarier!' (Sebastian Johnson (age 10) SUNDAY EXPRESS 5.2.06 )

'There are scenes of high tension and excitement, especially towards teh end, and what remains in the memory are the strong human bonds and physicality of the lives they lead.' (BOOKS FOR KEEPS )

'Fans of Wolf Brother cannot fail to be equally captivated by this second title in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness...Paver's prose is rich and evocative. The reader is transported to a fictional context which is wholly convincing, and the depth of her research has paid huge dividends here.' (Rachel Bowler SCHOOL LIBRARIAN )

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first?, 16 Jul 2006
It is quite posssible that this is better than the first book. They story takes on a deeper, more mature, and scarier road. This time Torak is alone, wolf has left him to be with another wolf pack. Sickness rages over the tribes and there are scary demon children running around causing fear in everyone. Torak knows he is the only one who can do the long journey to the Seal Islands to get the cure, and to save his adopted tribe from succumbing into sickness.
But can he do it alone? Without wolf?

Paver describes Toraks world with such detail that you swear you can smell the dmapness of the forest, and rankness of the sick. The way she describes the sickness is disturbing and almost too much even for me. But that is what makes her a queen of words, adnd what makes these books so spellbinding!

I can hardly wait for the 3rd one :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A miracle of a book, 1 Aug 2006
By Trixy (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Spirit Walker continues the tale of Torak. He is still camping with the Raven Clan, but feels more of an outsider than ever. When the Clan and several others who dwell in the forest fall sick, Torak takes it upon himself to find the cure.

His quest leads to the Seal Islands, where he is followed, held for breaking the law, caught in tight situations (literally) and betrayed.

A miracle masterpiece from Michelle Paver. Spirit Walker will keep you enthralled until the last page. I can't wait for no. 3!

5.0 out of 5 stars Step back in time and transport yourself to another world!, 1 Feb 2007
By S. Barnes (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It's been a long time since I read book one (Wolf Brother) in the Chronicles of Darkness series, but it soon came flooding back when I started to read Spirit Walker.

Set in Stone Age Scandinavia, in book two Torak's journey continues, and the destiny we are given a glimpse of in Wolf Brother is more fully revealed.

At the opening of the book Torak's faithful companion, wolf, has left his side to live with a wolf pack in the mountains. Torak has been taken in by the Raven clan, living in the forest. However, when a strange and horrible sickness strikes suddenly into the heart of the clan, Torak know that it is he who must try to find some answers...

A wonderfully fast-paced and twisting plot. Expect the unexpected! I can't wait to read the next one.
