Gibbons deserves to be recognised as a national treasure.

Review

"Gibbons deserves to be recognised as a national treasure." (The Bookseller )

"A powerful thriller which demonstrates how, in the stories of 14-year-old Ian Moore and his father's Belfast past, "the troubles had stolen all the wee boys' childhoods". Many layers, no simplifications". (Robert Dunbar The Irish Times, 11 Dec 04 )

Gibbons makes you feel what it is like when everyday life goes haywire. There is lots of action, and 14-year old Ian is easy to relate to. (Julia Eccleshare The Guardian )

'a powerfully written and exciting thriller... a thought provoking book for young adults as well as a tense and compelling read.' (Kate Blake WRITE AWAY! )

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 20 Jul 2005
This was the first Alan Gibbons book i read, and it was in a completely different stye to what i normally read. i had started it once and left it, but then again i did that with the first harry potter book b4 it became famous. Once you start reading Gibbons captures your whole attention with a quick paced novel that you cant put down. As soon as i finished it i went onto another of his books, this time a bit more different to the topics i normally read. But i found out that whatever Gibbons writes he can steal your thoughts and attenton.no matter what the blurb says the book itself is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Defender, 7 Nov 2005

Book Review Of
The Defender

The author of this book the defender is Alan Gibbons. It has fighting and crime involved in the story. This story is about Kenny Kincaid who does a bank robbery and steals quarter of a million pounds. He escaped from prison and has the police looking for him.
The main Characters of this story are Kenny Kincaid and his son Ian Kincaid. They are realistic because they are on the run from all the fuzz and when his son grows up he is on the run too. Kenny is a man who likes to break the law all the time and Ian Kincaid is nothing like his father. I like both of the characters because they are both different people basically.
The story is based on Kenny robbing a bank and then finding out that he has a son and he has been on the run ever since he broke out of prison. I enjoy this book because there is a lot of action in it. Over all I really liked this book and if you see it in the library you should take it out and read it.
