Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

You can't go wrong with Horrid Henry, the revolting little boy who has wooed and won stern hearts with his dirty knees, falling-down socks and absolute determination to be in the middle of everything. A Helping of Horrid Henry combines three of the very best Henry-wreaks-havoc tales in one chunky helping, making it the ideal book for long journeys and school holidays: even the most reluctant reader will find Henry hard to resist. It's ideal for ages 5-8. --Susan Harrison

Product Description

Horrid Henry creates havoc wherever he goes. To his well-meaning parents and to every adult whose path he crosses, he is the ultimate nightmare child. His naughtiness is of the kind all children secretly admire and few dare to aspire to. He doesn't always mean to be bad, but the best-laid plans have a habit of going wrong - and you can't help sympathizing with anyone who has a little brother like Perfect Peter ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably funny!, 17 Jul 2001
By dfrost@uclan.ac.uk (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
Anyone who has chidren between the ages of 5-8 will love 'A Helping of Horrid Henry'. This compilation is an absolute bargain with three fantastic books in one. Each section contains four hilariously funny stories that relate to the everyday experiences of young school aged children. The stories cover themes like 'ghosts, school trips, getting rich and nits' to name just a few. Each story has a set of characters (like Sour Susan and Greedy Graham)that provides the context within which Horrid Henry gets up to no good. Unlike 'Perfect Peter' (Henry's brother), who likes 'nature, stamp collecting and healthy food' Horrid Henry is devious and naughty, but in an unbelievably funny way. I have a seven year old daughter who really enjoyed the stories in this volume and is in the process of collecting more. Francesca Simon has a great talent for conveying the experiences and aspirations of children in a manner that hooks them in and leaves them wanting more. 'A Helping of Horrid Henry' provides a more contemporary approach to those looking for an alternative or change from more traditional children's books like Enid Blyton's 'Famous Five'. The apppeal and strength of this book is its contemporary relevance in an extremely funny context that children of this age group can relate to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always a success, 13 Feb 2004

I have tried out the Horrid Henry books with groups of children as a babysitter, and as a teacher. Children love to either hear them read aloud, or to read them themselves. The books are spot on for the 5-8 age range, and are fun for the adults who share them too. You can read the Horrid Henry books in any order; they will all prove a smash hit. Funny and clever: they will appeal to children who like, or will go on to like Roald Dahl (although the humour isn't quite as rude as Dahl can be!)

5.0 out of 5 stars just brilliant - more please!, 21 Aug 2001
By A. Craig "Amanda Craig" (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

This has to be the best, and best-value book for children between 5-8 around. Combining three books in one, its various short stories perfectly convey Horrid Henry's struggles and triumphs at school and home when confronted with a succession of everyday experiences - getting nits, going on a school trip, having snobbish relations to stay at Christmas - plus one or two less usual ones such as going on a kids' TV show. My children read and re-read these, and we all still laugh. He is the funniest anti-hero ever. Oh, and we also recommend 'Helping Hercules', just as funny, about a modern girl-brat coming to the aid of various mythical Greek heroes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I bought this for a bit of light relief from the rigours of an active 5 year old. I wasn't disappointed and each story now has the complete attention of my boy at bedtime!
