3.0 out of 5 stars Too much filler to be a really good book, 1 Jun 2003
By Aj Sutton (Coventry, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The book begins with a chapter on the author's early life. this is nothing spectacular although the anicdote about meeting lord Lucan is certainly very interesting.
A general chapter on the gambling followed by a chapter describing a gambling cruise are also both interesting although again nothing spectacular.
I found the next three chapters particularly disappointing. The first, a fictional memoir describes someone called Dave playing in the most obscure home games of poker, with the hands played described in great detail. It wouldve seemed more appropriate if games of poker that the reader might actually familiar with be used here. The next chapter is a mini-treatise on internet poker, which is fine, but a little out of place in this book. And then there is a review on poker literature. Again this just seems out of place here.
the book's saving grace is the author's account of his participation in the world championship of poker. This chapter is brilliant but at only 30 pages long does not quite save the rest of the book.
The late David Spanier is an excellent writer with a clear passion for gambling and poker, but this book does suffer from the choice of material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Autobiography written through the lens of poker & games., 22 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Really interesting idea. Rather than just write a straight autobiography the author has chosen to interpret his life through one of his abiding fascinations, poker. Loads of interesting stuff about how poker is used in the wider world, in films, books and politics, (Nixon and Watergate was a poker game!). Also smaller more intimate stuff. How the author met, through poker all sorts of people from the infamous Lord Lucan to Hollywood actor Matt Damon. A couple of the chapters are quite technical about why poker is such a game of skill, not luck. Overall though this was a really interesting read. Apart from anything else it has loads of fantastic tips and skills for winning in poker games and life in general.
