Book Description
Janet Prentice is a former Wren who fell in love during the preparation for Normandy. The death of her fianci and her hope clouds her future, even when World War II is ended. Tragically, her self-destructing urge takes her further towards despair.

About the Author
Nevil Shute Norway worked as an aeronautical engineer at Vickers before setting up his own airship company. He served in both world wars and was a commander in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in World War II, working on secret projects. He flew his own aircraft to Australia to research On the Beach, before settling there permanently. His books are based on his own wartime and aircraft industry experiences.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, sad and poignant tale., 30 May 2000
Requiem for a Wren is a compelling tale. I believe that it will hold special fascination for those with a connection to the Women's Royal Naval Service, both past and present. I am still a serving member of the Royal Navy and I found this book in the dusty archives of an office where I worked. I started to read it out of boredom and found myself unable to put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, though not a lot happens., 8 May 2001
By A Customer
It's one of those books in which not an awful lot happens but you just can't put down. The whole book is rather depressing, but if you have an interest in WWII it is truly enjoyable. If you do buy this book there is quite a clever twist at the end. Which, retrospectiveley, is a fairly obvious solution but when reading the book you may not see coming. The meaning of some of the terms and abbreviations in the book passed me by, but I could still grasp most of the plot. Another of Shute's great works of fiction is "On the Beach" and is truly worth reading. A GREAT WORK OF FICTION.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Piece of Post-War Fiction, 28 May 2001
By A Customer
Requiem for a Wren is the story of Janet Proctor who goes to post-war Australia to care for the parents of her dead fiancee.

The story opens with the fiancee's brother returning home from England as a war hero with an amputated leg. When he returns he finds that the housemaid has committed suicide. He then pieces together the life of the dead girl.

The book is nostalgic and offers a view of the world now half a century ago. It is a good read and the pages turn easily as one is engrossed in the story.

A gripping tear-jerker. Shute has an ability to write equally well from the female point of view. He gives us a taste of middle class behaviour and values of the time, thankfully... Read more

Like 'On The Beach' this is not typical Nevil Shute. It's concerned with a personal, rather than global, tragedy. Read more
