Product Description

New York Post

A fine swashbuckler by an accomplished storyteller

About the Author

Nicholas Monsarrat was born in Liverpool and educated at Cambridge University, where he studied law. His career as a solicitor encountered a swift end when he decided to leave Liverpool for London, with a half-finished manuscript under his arm and #40 in his pocket. With the publication of his classic, The Cruel Sea, he became one of the most successful novelists of the twentieth century, whose rich and varied collection bears the hallmark of a truly gifted writer.

1.0 out of 5 stars What was he thinking of?, 14 Jul 2002
This is by far the weakest of the Nicholas Monsarrat books that I have so far read. One dimensional characters, extraordinarily gratuitous violence and none of the insights into human nature which characterised some of his earlier books such as the Story of Esther Costello or the Tribe That Lost It's Head. Save your time for other things.
