4.0 out of 5 stars a great read, 11 Mar 2003
By A Customer
Initially, from reading the prologue, I thought this book was going to be a comedy, and although it is very funny, it's actually very serious as well.
The story is about two sisters - one a married mother of three, and one the ex-manager of a London restaurant, who has come home to her mother in Ireland after the breakdown of her relationship.
The book deals with the issue of domestic violence, and the way the author describes how Pamela has convinced herself that her husband's violence is just his way of showing his love, is very accurate and true to life.
I'd definatley reccommend this.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Discovery, 17 April 2003
By A Customer
I found this book in a library in a hotel in Barbados. I admit, I began reading thinking it would be a light, fluffy read for the holiday and was quite surprised by the 'meatiness'of the story. It is told through the viewpoints of two sisters. It starts off with a good smattering of humour (I particularly enjoyed the final bus journey) but gradually darkens into the subject of domestic violence, which is handled very convincingly. It's compelling reading - I finished it in two days.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing view of relationships, 27 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Having already read The Onion Girl, I had already assumed that this fundamentally funny book would have a stronger edge then the usual fiction available today. The story centres around two sisters and their mother who all have very different relationships with their partners. The most compelling thing about reading this book is the view of how human suffering affects people and their personalities and choices in different ways. The reader finds themselves empathising and championing their cause. I found it very thought provoking and an immensely interesting read and would reccommend it as a 'real' story in comparison to the 'over happy' publications that flood our shelves.
