5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 24 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Onion Girl (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my holidays as I liked the cover. (Very shallow, I know) However, it has been one of the best books I have read. The characters are vibrant and seem to walk off the page. While it is a dark book, there is plenty of humour to balance the plot. The story centres around two misfits - Jack, a school teacher with a gambling problem, and nervous, self-conscious Meg. They knew one another as kids and then Jack moved away and never wrote to Meg. The story picks up ten years later and we see how their lives have changed and what made them become the people they are.
The book had depth and a lot of bite and I would definately recommed it to anyone wanting a different type of read to the fluffy romances out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic buy for the holidays. A great read., 20 Jul 2001

This review is from: The Onion Girl (Hardcover)
Meg and Jack are definitly some of the best drawn characters I have come across. The whole plot is just gripping, never predicable like so many books written for the female market. Tina Reilly brings the charaters and their situations alive. I found I could really empathise with both Meg and Jack. Meg is so weak, usually I hate weak charaters, but not in this book! Thankfully Jack is not the big strong man that usually features in so many books. Both were so real, and I really wanted to know what would happen next. I could never predict where the story would lead, but it all flowed so naturally. The ending...well it was a relief! I don't think my heart could have taken much more tension. I hate to give away too much of the plot it would ruin it. Definitly this is the best book Tina Reilly has written yet. Buy it NOW!!! You can't be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A completely compelling read - absolutely unputdownable!, 29 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Onion Girl (Hardcover)
I picked this book up at Dublin airport at the beginning of February. Just fancied something to read on the flight home. The 'blurb' at the back caught my eye (always a good sign!) - I'd not heard of Tina Reilly, but decided to give it a go.

Do not be at all surprised if you find yourself reading this at every opportunity - sometimes with the flimsiest of excuses (as if you'd really have time for any reading in the afternoon!).

The storyline is compelling and you need to know what happens between the two friends. It is a story that everyone can relate to - whether they recognise themselves, a work colleague or your best friend from school.

I have recommended this book to all my friends and will be keeping an eye out for Tina Reilly in the future. Please note - Tina Reilly is the new Maeve Binchy!
