Amazon.co.uk Review
In On Football England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson delivers his thesis on how to win--and he doesn't mean sticking a big lad up front, keeping it tight and playing for the set-pieces. This is an exploration of the average footballer's least celebrated organ--the mind--and how to nurture it to improve sporting performance. In the company of sports psychologist, Willi Railo, Eriksson analyses his experience of building winning teams--in particular the 2000 Italian champions Lazio--and addresses the key psychological issues that have to be managed if individuals and groups are to fulfill their potential. Traditionally British football managers have struggled with this sort of thing--performance analysis swiftly reduced to shouting about giving 110 per cent--and for fans reared on the blood and thunder ethos of the Premiership, some of it is going to read like pretty revolutionary stuff:

Eriksson: I spend a lot of energy taking the aggression out of my players. All a player has to do is begin to argue with the referee, play dirty or quarrel with the opposition for there to be a danger that their performance will sink like a stone.

Anyone who has ever endured an extended session of corporate team-building exercises will be familiar with a lot of the language used here, but incredibly, On Football manages not only to render ideas about "winning cultures" intelligible, but also genuinely interesting. This is not a dry, unapproachable work--the overall style is conversational, there are plenty of colour photographs and illustrations, and the authors have taken care to root relatively intangible ideas in actual big-name examples. Anyone who plays or watches sport will find this book enhancing--and challenging--their understanding of what is happening on the pitch. This is an intriguing, intelligent work, made astonishing (think Kevin Keegan) in that it's been written by the man who is actually shaping the fortunes of the English national team. --Alex Hankin

5.0 out of 5 stars Teacups without tantrums : A genius at work, 21 Jun 2001
By A Customer
As the nation embraces a footballing mentor of world-renowned status, this easy to read guide allows you to understand what really separates "the sven from the boys" if you'll forgive the pun. Unlike so many footballing handbooks and managerial literature you are immediately struck by the level of input that Eriksson himself has in the compilation of this book. Unlike so many of the Charlie Hughes inspired "Bootcamp Bibles" You read an eclectic and thorough approach of controlling and maximising players potential through focusing on the most important element of any sporting endeavour, mental performance. The spectrum of psychological analysis is wonderfully detailed with topics covered spanning the obvious such as self-confidence to the more detailed and challenging topic of mental training. The premise Erriksson works upon is that at the top level of any sport the difference in performance lies not in ability but in mental preparation and performance. With more impressive name dropping than Jamie Theakston at a wedding you can see from the characters he has worked with that Errikssons Philosophy has been adopted and championed by some of the very best performers on a world footballing stage today. If you have long held an interest in the quiet man from the Land of Ikea or you are merely a coaching disciple, a new messiah graced our shores this year and one I believe will help shape the future of coaching techniques and player philosophy towards an era of national success such as the contemporary French footballing Dynasty fashioned by Houlier, Jaquette and Lamaire. If its unconventional training routines or creative set plays you are looking for you won't find that here. However, If the ability to motivate, support and most importantly understand your players is of paramount importance to you, you won't find a better handbook than this.....Prepare to be converted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sven-Goran Eriksson on Football 2003, 1 Jul 2004
I found this book both informative and inspiring. It is a unique insight into the pyschological effects athletes experience before, during and post the event. It is written along the lines of a question and answer session between Willi Railo (Norwegian Psychologist) and Sven. The book gives tips on goal setting and training the mind to achieve your goals. This is an absolute must if you want to get the most out of your team.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant insight into the mental aspects managing, 1 Jan 2002

Sven and A psycologist go into the many aspects associated with performance on the football field. They both use their vast experience to show how each factor can affect performance and how players can be 'mentally trained' to perform better.
A brilliant read.
