Product Description

Combining the scientist's limitless vision, the historian's sense of destiny and the novelist's vivid feel for the everyday stuff of human life, the great fantasies of H.G. Wells constitute the most impressive - and the most exciting - achievement of twentieth century science fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Pleased, 23 Jan 2003
Abandon all preconceptions of HG Wells until you read this compilation of four of his greatest novels - The Time Machine, War Of The Worlds, The Island Of Doctor Moreau and First Men In The Moon. The writing style is surprisingly easy and you'll be hooked before you know it. This man invented sci-fi and so much more. Marvel at the genius behind Doctor Moreau, which is more relevant than ever today. These stories are over a hundred years old but come alive when you read them. Please buy this to appreciate how fantastic these stories are. Think to yourself which stories written today will still be read a hundred years from now? Enjoy.

I had previously ordered this same book from another supplier and got messed around by them so I was very happy to find it here on amazon and this seller has restored my faith in online sales! Very quick, good price and I would definitely use this seller again.

4.0 out of 5 stars a set of classics from a master, 20 Jan 2005
By Gareth Chester "student" (Cheshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This collection of 4 stories by HG Wells is a fairly definitive collection. It includes some of the greatest sci-fi stories written. More importantly, they aren't full of all the techical jargon that blights many modern authors. Wells sees the science element as an opportunity to dissect the characters whom he presents us with. The stories are sometimes satirical (such as the commentary in Moreau) and sometimes a warning (the 'perfect' society in Time Machine). The best story here is arguably War of The Worlds, which is far more interesting than the film version. The style of writing may be fairly Dickensian, yet as studies of Victorian/Edwardian society, Wells is more accesible and more enjoyable, yet no less biting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Body of Science Fiction Work Ever Written
I bought this from Amazon as a definitive H. G. Wells collection.

Wells' work is very easy to read, unlike some of Dickens', and you can see why Hugo Gernsback later ran them as... Read more
