Product Description

Product Description
The quantum world is the world of the very small - the micro-world ('quantum' means the smallest component of a system or the smallest change a system can make). Q IS FOR QUANTUM is about the inner structure of everything, a quest which, like the quest for an understanding of the Universe at large, goes back to the ancient Greeks and touches all of scientific and philosophical thought since then. Historical highlights include Newton's work on particles and Maxwell's work on waves. The longer biographies in the book include Rutherford, Feynman, Crick and Watson. An extended Introduction, which sets out the present state of knowledge, is followed by the main A-Z section, and then by 'Timelines' to indicate what was discovered when.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars A FIVE STAR TOURIST GUIDE TO THE UNIVERSE, 18 Oct 2002

.

For all you fans of the late, lamented Douglas Adams (The HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy) we have now got definitive, non-fictional guides to the Cosmos and the micro-world of Quantum Phenomena.

John Gribbin's latest book "Q is for Quantum" is the perfect companion to his 1996 masterpiece "Companion to the Cosmos".

Gribbin's presents his work in a well illustrated, encyclopaedic (A to Z) style with nearly all topics having (hyper?)links to cross-references elsewhere in the book. He puts great emphasis on the human dimension of science as well as on the purely physical phenomena and theories he describes so well. The mini-biographies of the scientists are fascinating in their own right, particularly when looking at the historical context and the geographic, social and academic connections/parallels that have led to these great advances in human thought.

Gribbin guides us along those amazing scientific paths of the past half millennia , from Galileo and Newton to Einstein and Hawking. He has this reader convinced that we are very close to realizing the ultimate dream of a Grand Unifying Theory (GUT) which ties together all the links between the forces of nature. His work is right up to date and includes the latest ideas on M-branes and superstrings.

The best way to read the book is to open it at random , find a topic of interest and see how far the hyperlinks can take you. Bliss for a net-head! The real strength of Gribbin's writing is to help us cover that great spectrum (in time and space) between the sub-atomic microworld of Quantum phenomena through to the edges of the Cosmos. Somewhere in the middle is the human dimension, dare I say, the "real world".

It was our late friend Douglas Adams who posed that trickiest of tri-lemmas ... What is the answer to that ultimate question, that is, the Meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything ? He told us ... it is 42 !

John Gribbin's agrees - look up his section on Planck. What is the smallest unit of time? Answer: zero, decimal point, FORTY TWO zeros, one second.

Before Planck time nothing much happened ... but then again ...

5.0 out of 5 stars A genius summation of the world of Micro physics., 19 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Q is for Quantum is a must for any enthusiastic explorer of cosmology. As with all John Gribbens scripts the subject matter is devistatingly intriguing and so kindly written for the enjoyment of all keen quantum explorers.

In the Book he covers a vaste spectrum of topics and gives reference to just about all relevent characters and theories which have given light and aided in the further development and understanding of the world of the micro through Quantum theory and wave mechanics.

The style of the writing is masterfully informative, without being verbose and daunting. The book is completely user friendly, being set in dictionary style, with a fantastic time line at the back and wonderful use of graphic aids.

"A quick overview of a hundred years of scientific investigation".

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - a genius account of life's true intricacies., 18 Dec 2000
"Anyone who is not shocked by Quantum theory has not understood it" Neils Bohr

Never a truer word spoken, but John Gribben is the master of communicating the world of Quantum madness. The style and composition of this book is such that the reader is lead on a wondrous adventure of discovery and infinite brilliance. Even the most clueless of scientific explorers can enjoy this fascinating account.

The subject matter is breathtakingly absorbing and Gribbin manages to summate very intricate topics into concise explanations. It is informative, wondrously exploratory and completely constructed in intelligent laymen terms.

A treasure to be sure.
