Product Description

Product Description
A small-format guide to Paris that focuses on the best things to do and see in the limited amount of time that a weekend allows. Divided into three major parts, the first explores the city's life and character through its culture and lifestyle, the second contains an area-by-area guide to the most interesting parts of the city and the third is a detailed shopping guide organised according to category. The guide gives recommendations for sight-seeing, eating and drinking and shopping and provides addresses and opening times to accompany each recommendation. All the essential practical information is given on such matters as transport, voltage, the currency and language.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Great Shopping Saturday in Paris, 27 May 2003
By Tastydogs (Reading, England) - See all my reviews
Sorry- this guidebook is perhaps the most fatuous possible guide to one of the great cities of the world.

The title indicates that this would be a perfect accompaniment to a weekend break in Paris. Alas not. The book is heavily geared towards shoppping hints not just in the overlong section on shopping but also in the what to see section. The Museum d'Orsay gets less wordage than a twee shop selling knick-nacks wrapped in linen in the next paragraph for instance.

I have no problem with a shopping guide but I feel this is what the guide should be called (especially when the great weekend stands to be ruined as a lot of shops are shut on Sunday anyway. The title of the book 'A GREAT WEEKEND IN PARIS' with its subtext 'where to stay, sightseeing, shopping' is just totally unbalanced.

What a disappointment from a large & respected French company. Perhaps the giveaway is that there is no publisher contact detail for suggestions & amendments

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst guidebook in the world EVER, 26 April 2003
By Tastydogs (Reading, England) - See all my reviews
My mistake. The title says 'A GREAT WEEKEND in Paris' with a small subtitle- where to stay, sightseeing, shopping.

The problem is that this book is almost entirely about shopping. So some shop that sells chintzy bits of linen gets a bigger write up than the Louvre. Now call me picky, but this does rather miss the point. If the book was called a 'GREAT WEEKEND in Bluewater' I could understand why they needed to throw in a couple of shops under the sightseeing section as well as maxing out under the shopping section- but for Paris?

Anyway, lets assume that my GREAT WEEKEND in Paris did require retail therapy. Well that would be a GREAT Saturday in Paris because this being France most of the shops are shut on Sunday. Oh darn nothing to do for half my GREAT weekend.

Well lets assume the book was called ' A GREAT SATURDAY shopping in Paris' then what of the recomendations themselves. Strangely I felt the recommendations were just a bit too foreign & exotic for me to dare- telling me to shop at temples of gallic charm such as the Virgin Megastore & Timberland. Still never mind, there are a couple of restaurants in there too. What can Paris offer? Apparently the highlight of the Champs Elysee is, of course, Planet Hollywood.

Sorry, must do better!
