4.0 out of 5 stars Too beautiful for this world, 20 April 2004
Finding words to describe this book is difficult, especially as I am notmyself gifted with the innovative, nay - ground breaking vocabulary, orcrafty word play/poetry of Bruce.
That Bruce has spent so much of his life on the football pitch and notbehind his typewriter should be a tragedy for literature - but heskillfully, stealthfully works his years of experience on the pitch intothis crime novella resulting in a story which will delight fans of murderand lower division football alike. Looking for a comparison? Nothing bearscomparison, though think Graham Greene / Harry Harris lovechild and youare somewhere near. The speeling mistakes are alright after a bit youdon't notice them, anyway you'll finish the bloody thing in half an hour, you'll never forget it though. I had to show this book to my mates, it'sunbelievably funny for me to imagine Steve Bruce actually writing thisthing, you have to read it to believe it.
Buy this book I think some of the money might go to Huddersfield Town, andyou will never look at Bruce the same way again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Confused but smiling, 5 Nov 2009
By K. Woodwards "Hoon" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a vexing book. On the one hand it is one of the most poorly writen books I have ever read, yet it is hugely satisfying. This, although not intentionally, is a hilarious read if it is steves cringe worthy use of the English language or just the image of him writing it something about this book tickled me pink. The thing I cherish most about this book however is that somehow Steve Bruce, a football manager, has somehow managed to write a murder mystery that is semi auto biographical, an outstanding feat we can all agree. Is this A man so devoid of imagination that he had to base a book on himself ( seemingly not capable of thinking of another name than Steve, and I bet he was just off the phone to john Barnes when he penned it) or Is there a genius at work here. Intentional or not this is a 5 star read and is worth an hour of anyones time. If you have any intrest in football or knowledge of Steve Barnes then this is a must.

In summary this is a book so bad it is good, dare I say great. It is bursting out it's bindings with moral truths and has a genuine underlying sense of honesty, integrity and good northeastern values (murder not included).
