Product Description

Review

'Toni Davidson is as good as Irvine Welsh, more clear-sighted than James Kelman - well-paced, well-written and compelling.' --Times Literary Supplement

Review

'A wonderful collection. It contains writing that often threatens to overwhelm the reader with explorative potential.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging and Exciting Writing, 26 Feb 2007
By Richard Drey (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
This is an incredible book, it reads like a novel even though it is a collection of themed short stories. Forget the idea that these stories are in any way sensational or overtly erotic. The power in these stories lies in their subtlety, their ability to lead the reader into some eclectic and vivid worlds and to create memorable characters. Davidson's writing is challenging make no mistake but his subervsive humour and willingness to explore difficult themes in an intelligent way make this a standout collection of stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and Thought Provoking, 26 Feb 2007
By Ashley More (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book absorbed me from start to finish. It led me into a weird and sometimes wonderful world. These are not stories about sex but about the possibilities of sexuality and sometimes that isn't pretty or nice or conventional. These are brave stories from a talented writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, but complicated!, 26 Feb 2007
The back cover of 'The Gradual Gathering of Lust' claims that this is a book full of 'eight great lusty love stories.' This implies that the stories are mere titiliation. But they are much more than that.

Davidson writes with intelligence about sex. He acknowledges the complicated nature of the subject matter, and isn't afraid of the darker side of human sexuality. But he writes with a beautiful lyricism that means these stories aren't bleak.

The lines have such a wonderful poetic rythmm to them, 'she had fallen thousands of feet and emerged from the sea with barely a scratch and her thoughts had turned to driftwood she could bind together with vines, to green saplings she could tear from the ground.'

There's also a lot of humour, the sexually frustrated Miss Globe X with her topaz encrusted vibrator, and Uri and Renzo the documentary makers who find themselves in tantric sex worskshop.

I really enjoyed reading this book, because it's so rare that a writer actually thinks intellectually about sex. There's more to putting sex into books than for mere titilation. Sex is the most complicated thing in the universe, and Toni Davidson is a brave and talented writer for exploring it in such depth.

These stories go beyond the title and explore not just ideas of sex and but the pscyhology and sociology of sexuality. But funny too, black, satirically funny. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Forced and thin
Canongate shouldn't be letting this sort of stuff out - they should know better. This is pretentious ill-informed nonsense, thinly dressed up as literature. Read more
