Product Description

Review

"'Hide and Seek is one of those rare novels you thrust at your friends and say "Read this!". It's ultra-convincingly written from the view point of a nine-year-old boy but it's a very adult read. Wise and funny and searingly sad but ultimately heart-warming' JACQUELINE WILSON 'What a spectacular debut, heartbreaking and hilarious. This is one of those books you'll never forget' JILL MANSELL 'Shockingly visceral, yet at the same time surprisingly humorous, Sambrook has produced a penetrating account of the effects of loss juxtaposed against the human will to soldier on' BIG ISSUE 'Touching, sad and very funny' INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY 'Vivid and brave' LITERARY REVIEW 'It is hard enough to remember what it feels like to be a child and harder still to recreate a child's voice convincingly. Yet that is what Clare Sambrook manages to do with an impressive blending of style and pathos' FINANCIAL TIMES 'Fans of Mark Haddon would be well advised to seek this debut out' DAILY MAIL"

5.0 out of 5 stars Find yourself with a game of 'Hide and Seek', 16 Jun 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Hide & Seek (Hardcover)
This is a novel I recommend EVERYONE to read. That is, if you are interested in a novel that can make you laugh and cry at the same time, and lets face it, who isn't? The traumatic events surrounding the disappearance of a small boy are written from the point of view of Harry his brother, aged nine. A technique that can so often turn out twee; writing from a child's perspective in this circumstance is sympathetically done and is, as a result, both believable and enjoyable. It reads like a children's book; in a good way, but the subject matter is distinctly adult. It is interesting to see tragedy discussed by a child with all the understanding a child has; nothing feels out of place, even the humour.
This is a great book. Read it and you may even discover something about yourself or 'the child in you!'

5.0 out of 5 stars Painfully good, 28 Jun 2005
This review is from: Hide & Seek (Hardcover)
Reading this book is like picking a scab, it's painful but compulsive.
If the reader stopped reading, perhaps then the characters' emotional suffering would end. The emotion strain is unremitting but the characterisation is strong so that the reader maintains hope and wills the characters to come through their ordeal.
Evocative writing of the middle classes without ever being stereotype or judgemental.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, but not a happy read, although there are laughs a plenty. If you liked "Curious incident.." you'll like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story to be read aloud, 17 Jun 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Hide & Seek (Hardcover)
This debut novel has all the characteristics of a good read. The reader enters into the world of the protagonist swiftly and though it is a sad tale, based around a tragedy, there is no sense of sentimentality in the portrayal of either the main character or those portrayed as around him. The book is a snapshot in the history of one little boy and how he sees the world following the disappearance of his brother.
I think that for anyone who has gone through such a process the book may be just too close to expressing a pain most of us would be thankful not to revisit.

I found reading the book to my self enjoyable, but it really came alive when I read it as a bedtime story to a nine year old girl. She listened attentively, carried bits of the story from the night before in her memory the next day, and asked about the characters as if they were real. She didn't seem too badly affected by the story of a family in despair and seemed to make real sense of how the boy inhabited his world.
I can only highly recommend this book, and also recommend that you read it aloud. It is a story written in a style to be listened to.
