Product Description

Product Description
Will Ferguson has spent the past three years criss-crossing Canada. In a helicopter above the barrenlands of the sub-arctic: in a canoe with his four year-old-son: on board seaplanes and along the Underground Railroad, Ferguson's travels have taken him from Cape Spear on the remote coast of Newfoundland to the sun-dappled streets of Olde Victoria. Through his engaging and witty prose style he takes us on a journey of discovery through Canada's hidden history and landscape. Funny, poignant and insightful, Beauty Tips from Moosejaw is a provocative tribute to a quirky and fascinating country.

About the Author
Will Ferguson was bom and raised in the former fur trapping settlement of Fort Vermilion in northem Canada. His other works include Hokkaido Highway Blues (1841952885) Happiness TM (1841953512) and Why I Hate Canadians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canada Explained!, 23 Jun 2005
By dogma13 (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
One of the best books I've read over the past year regardless of genre. I have to admit I'm a Canada nut after spending the best part of a month in Alberta and BC last year and I can't wait to get back there. The book goes some way to controlling my desire to just quit work and get on the next plane. It is both informative and very funny and makes you think just what a large and diverse part of the world Canada has become and is still evolving into. Will Ferguson goes basically coast to coast in his "travels in search of Canada" but manages not to fall into the trap that most travel writers fall into i.e. "I did this..", "then we did this.." etc etc. The journey is very much linear from the west coasts Victoria to Newfoundland's Great Northern Pennisula but filled with such amazing historically and factual accounts that it stuns me as to why Canadian history is not better understood throughout the rest of the world as it is so interesting. Any new fathers, like myself, are bound to get a kick out of his adventures with his family as they are amusing and in places very touching. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes travel, history, family, good writing, laughter and Canada.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but not great, 1 Mar 2006
I was disappointed with this book but only because I had had such high hopes in the first place.

For me, the problem is that it falls between a few camps. Is it a travel book, a memoir or a history book? A number of the chapters are awfully dull and you get the impression that Mr Ferguson is reading aloud from a history book he loaned out the library and dropping in a few personal asides every now and then.

Still, the guy can really write and there are some beautiful turns of phrase. But I was left with the nagging feeling that he's more of a novelist....

It's also not that funny (possibly because I like my humour toilet related)
