As I read the first few pages the book seemed to be an authentic and intriguing view of how Jane Austen had been influenced by the straight-laced nature of her times.
It was only as I read the sex scenes themselves that it became clear that this was a spoof.
Cleverly written, it does in its own way add to Austen, satirically answering those who claim her work is boring.
A good novelty book.

I'm sorry to say that this book was, like so many books which build on Austen's masterpieces, a real disappointment. It's not that it's particularly bad; indeed the premise is intriguing and the first couple of episodes mildly amusing. But the writing, the dialogue in particular, is so out of keeping with Austen precise and careful style, that it is incredible; and so repetitive that it soon becomes predictable, then boring, ultimately pointless. The core idea would have been better worked into an article for the Sunday papers or a literary journal - there's not enough originality to sustain a full length novel, even one as short as this is. So sad.

The combination of nearly faultless Austen-style writing with decidedly risqué subject matter is a delight. The eroticism is for the most part restrained rather than overt, and the witty placement (I nearly said 'insertions') of the spoof passages in Austen's original text is very cleverly done. Altogether a delightful adult read: I bought it as a Valentine present for my spouse, and we enjoyed reading it to each other in bed. (Some reviewers on this page seem unable to spot satire from an inch away.)
