Review

"One of Scotland's finest writers." i-D Magazine "Hird reminds one of early Ian McEwan or Iain Banks, deeply unsettling, deathly comic and peculiarly tender." Sunday Times"

Product Description

Urban tales of despair and dysfunction are Laura Hird's trademark and she does not disappoint in "Hope and Other Urban Tales". Set in the low-rent areas of Edinburgh, Hird's slices of reality are gritty, bleak and often darkly funny. Yet the possibility of hope, always just out of reach, unifies this collection, conveying that just as circumstances can reveal the morally obscure darkness in 'good' people, so can seemingly irredeemable characters harbour well-hidden pockets of humanity.

Should be 2 stars.
Not my type of book. This is the first and only book of Laura Hird that I have read and is certianly not the type of book I enjoy reading.
The 11 stories are all quite dark and some of them are quite depressing. There is too much despair and dysfunction in her writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the UK's brightest literary stars, 25 April 2007
I love Laura Hird's writing. Ever since discovering her via "The Children Of Albion Rovers" anthology I have been a big fan of her writing, and also of her website which showcases a lot of exciting up and coming literary talent. Hope... is a tour de force, a collection of stories told in a dizzying array of voices all of which evoke Urban Scotland effortlessly, all of which are graced with (black) humor, humanity and and a skill with words which easily puts her better known Scottish contemporary Irvine Welsh to shame.

By all rights laura Hird should be one of britains best known writers. Rest assured this book is even better than Born Free, and is a real assurance that the short story is not dead.
