Product Description

The resulting book is a charming and beautifully written memoir that is not only a heartfelt lament for Hill's own youth and innocence but also for a simpler and more honest age.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gentle, but fascinating read, 15 Jan 2004
By A Customer
What a great book! Very readable, this book gives a fascinating insight into what it was like to work on a lighthouse. Seen through the eyes of a young art student, the book describes the quirky characters of other keepers and gives enough detail about the working of the lighthouse to be interesting, but not too much technical detail. My only criticism of the book is that it is not long enough - I felt really sad to finish the book and (like Peter) return to the hussle and bussle of the outside world. Thoroughly recommended for a charming, easy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back in time, 27 Feb 2004
By A Customer
A thoroughly good read. Had it from library on no renewal basis on Wednesday and was able to return it on Saturday as I could not stop reading it. An easy to read style with a wealth of marvellous stories about the other lighthouse keepers. A dip back in time to the early 70's though the references to the music were beyond me. I had heard two episodes on Book of the Day (radio4) and just had to read it for myself. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An honest, enjoyable read, 23 Oct 2004

(REAL NAME)
This book was serialised a while back on BBC R4. I enjoyed what I heard and, when the paperback was published recently, I had to get a copy.

This is a very "honest" book. It describes, in very accessible terms, the experiences of a young man learning about lighthouse keeping. Only once in a while does the author apply 20-20 hindsight to make an observation. It is perceptive and moving, but certainly not without a good amount of humour. My kind of book for sure and I recommend it to anyone. I am left with a feeling that I'd like to visit some of those lights and a sadness that he describes a lifestyle that is now past.
