4.0 out of 5 stars Finger-lickin good., 12 April 2003
If you're looking for a book that'll keep you turning pages for hours until there are none left to turn, you could do a lot worse than 'Chicken'. Detailing some of the stranger experiences that he had as a professional gigolo, Sterry confronts the troubling personal and moral issues encountered in what for many men would be a dream job. Intertwining the period of his 'chickening' with an account of his childhood and sometimes fraught relationships with his family, Sterry builds a picture of a fascinating, if dysfunctional life, spent criss-crossing America in the wake of his father's professional development, and washing up in 1970's Hollywood. His story contains all the elements of excellent autobiography; humour, honesty, pathos, and a wonderful writing style that's part reflective, part stream-of consciousness.

One point to note though- the story is so good, and so well-written, that it probably won't last too long. It certainly left me looking for more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, 1 Jun 2005

I read this book a while age but decided not to write a review on it as it was so dull it defied description. However, having seen the good reviews of this book I felt duty bound to offer an alternative. This books is mediocre, and pretty dull. None of the tales really engage, and it will not add anything to your life by having read this. I am pretty tired of nobodies offering their dull, and usually sordid, little tales. If you want to read about someones life, or a little curious about lives that differ from yours then read something that has a point. And is well-written for that matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!, 2 Mar 2007
I recently reread Chicken, and I remembered how much I loved this book . It's muscular yet lyrical, contains amazing language , it's full of poetry and pain , it's laugh out loud funny , and as far as I know it's the first book in history ever written by someone who was a teenage boy having sex for money with middle-aged women . And the little vignettes of childhood provide a wonderful palette cleanser , they give an insight into why this nice suburban boy fell down the rabbit hole . It's easy to see why this book has been lauded everywhere from the New York Times, to the London Times to the Irish Times , which compared the writing to Daschle Hammett and Hunter S. Thompson . It's also clear why this book is being made into a Hollywood movie . I can't wait to read the next memoir of David Henry Sterry , which I believe is about his crazy days and strange nights as the master of ceremonies at Chippendale's in New York City in 1985 .

I'm so tired of people that think they're clever writing diatribe like this. Obviously this man is so in love with himself that the point is lost (whatever it was) and he never... Read more
