A really varied selection of stories with something to appeal to pretty much everyone (and, therefore something to irritate everyone too). For me the irritation lay in some predictably macho introspection of the 'Nathan Barley' School which will doubtless excite publishers. The appeal, more specifically, was in Andrew Lloyd-Jones's limpid piece, 'Coveting' which eschewed easy genre or newbie enthusiasm to create a measured, emotionally mature treasure.

My interest in new, young writers prompted me to buy this book and I was not expecting much, having become jaded of late with the paucity of new talent. However, when I put this book down I was filled with renewed hope for the future of literature. The stories are all original and never read like the work of new writers (in fact, in some cases the writers have a wealth of experience behind them as the competition was open to all comers - reportedly a Whitbread nominee was turned down). In particular the work of Neil Cocker (KGB hairdressing) and Gareth Goodall (Salvage) caught me by surprise, being both beautifully told and compellingly written. I would recommend this book to anybody who frequently finds themselves asking: "whither the novel?" Hopefully the contributors to this compilation will use this opportunity to develop their talents and I look forward to the publication of their first novels.

Gareth Goodall's short but perfectly constructed story is a gem of a read. The ending boggled my mind. This young man has the gift - there is no doubt about it, Goodall is Gold!
