Product Description

Synopsis

This work is the second part of Hugh Collins's autobiography, and takes up the controversial figure's life story from the day of his release from prison. He was, in his own words, "a time bomb waiting to go off". What follows is a candid account of a lifer coming to terms with his violent past.

From the Back Cover

When Hugh Collins was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder he earned a reputation as one of Scotland's most feared and violent prisoners until he was eventually transferred to Barlinnie's Special Unit where he took up sculpture and writing.

This, the second part of Collins' autobiography, is a painfully raw and candid account of an ex-lifer trying to come to terms with his bloodstained past as he struggles to cope with freedom in the full glare of the media spotlight.

Walking Away is a unique insight into the mind of an individual who was institutionalised and brutalised by decades of crime and jail. It is a searing indictment of the failures of the prison system. But most of all it is the painfully honest story of a human being attempting to carve out a new life while his past threatens to drag him under.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly brave, honest, thought - provoking book., 24 Feb 2002

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Walking Away (Paperback)
This book charts Hugh's uneasy journey from prison, and his "walking away" from his former life in the truest sense. This is not a glossy "aren't I wonderful, look at me now" type of book, Hugh is brutally honest about how close he came to walking back. He is open about his own frailities and what he sees as his failings. You are left in no doubt as to this being exactly how it was.
Hugh's use of dialect and dialogue make this autobiography an immediate experience, his voice rings in your ears as you read.
This book is not just all about Hugh though, it's a loving tribute to the unfailing support of his wife, the artist Caroline McNairn. In the latter pages it's an examination of how society is currently equipped to handle to rehabilitation of long term prisoners, and of it's attitude towards them. Probably the most "real" autobiography you will ever read. And you should, because you won't forget it.
