5.0 out of 5 stars Awe inspiring....., 30 Dec 2005
This is a stunning collection of photos of the nature of one of Europes wildest landscape. This beautifull collection will inspire and amaze you - I got this bok as a present and my mother-in-law wanted to keep it after see looked inside the covers! If you like Colin Prior (!!! Which you should!!!) then this book is the nature equivilant! Some of the photos have to be seen to be believed - the narration is useful too - teaches about the subject in the photograph. eg. Did you know Lynx are native to Scotland....? No - neither did I!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning photographs and a great read!, 24 May 2006

I took this out of the library and I don't want to give it back! This book is absolutely superb and I contragulate Peter Cairns and Mark Hamblin on a truly wonderful book. As you browse through the pages and look at the amazing, clear photographs it strikes you how very special and important our wildlife and landscapes are to us all. I highly recommend you get this book. The images are still etched in my mind even now. Get it and I guarentee you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful representation of Britains last wilderness, 2 Oct 2007
The title of this book gives you a clue as to what dominates it, and therefore how much you enjoy it will be determined largely by your appreciation of photography. Practical wildlife enthusiasts who use illustrations largely as an aid to identification may be disappointed by the lack of background information that is provided, while more romantic ones who enjoy the beauty of nature without needing to learn too much will love it. However whether you're a photo nut or not you cant fail to be amazed by the beauty of the images and the skill with which they were taken.

Spread over several chapters the book covers all aspects of the Cairngorms from the different seasons to the various habitats the national park includes. Each chapter starts with a page of text giving info about the subject of the chapter, followed by about 12 pages of captioned photographs. Unfortunately the captions give limited info on the species pictured or how the photo was taken, and although the book is large (about the size of A4 paper) the pictures vary in size and some are relatively small.

At 140 pages long and the vast majority of these taken up with a single photograph, Wild Lands is a quick book to read and unless you are someone who spends a lot of time appreciating photos and enjoys looking at them more than once, then it probably isn't worth the retail price. The Amazon cost may be more worth it, but I'd say its most worthy of a trip to the library.

As a way of learning about the Cairngorms National Park this is useful but perhaps not the best source. However, as a way of appreciating its beauty and the beauty of nature in general you cant get any better.
