5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, 25 May 2005
I am not normally a fan of nautical books, but this one was different. It includes the life of the whalers wives and even their children as well as the hardships of teh whaler's lives. I did not know that some whaling captain's took their wives with them. I was also intrigued to learn that some Scottish whalers also had wives among the Inuit.
This book gives a new angle on social history

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 2 Jun 2005
A tour de force of an ancient industry that, thankfully, is now gone. A book of hardships and danger, of losses and bravery. Overall a book about people, the men and boys who went whaling and the women that they left behind, or who sometimes came along too.
Not to be missed
