Product Description

Product Description
At the start of the American Civil War, neither side had warships on the Mississippi River, which was a vital strategic artery. In what would prove the vital naval campaign of the war, both sides fought for control of the river. While the Confederates relied on field fortifications and small gunboats, the Union built a series of revolutionary river ironclads. First commissioned in January 1862, these ironclads spent the next two years wresting control of the Mississippi, fighting in a string of decisive engagements that altered the entire course of the war. This book explains how these vessels worked, how they were constructed, how they were manned and how they were fought.

About the Author
Angus Konstam is an experienced Osprey author with over 12 titles in print, and is currently contracted to produce a Campaign Series title on the great Mediterranean galley battle; Lepanto, 1571. He is also the author of non-Osprey maritime books including 'A History of Shipwrecks', 'A History of Pirates', 'The Atlas of Medieval Europe' and 'Warship'. He has long been associated with maritime affairs, having served in the Royal Navy, practised underwater archaeology and curated a maritime museum. His understanding of the subject is based on years of professional studies in maritime history, and an intimate knowledge of the leading maritime collections on both sides of the Atlantic. Tony Bryan is a freelance illustrator of many years experience. He initially qualified in Engineering and worked for a number of years in Military Research and Development, and has a keen interest in milltary hardware - armour, small arms, aircraft and ships. Tony has produced many illustrations for partworks, magazines and books, including a number of titles in the New Vanguard series.
