The advantage of the "Osprey" format is that it allows a writer to produce a small 15,000 word snapshot of a subject, something more than an overview but less than a highly complex and detailed study. This, combined with the superb illustrations (in this case painted by the highly talented Angus McBride)produced an appealing little package.
I've chosen to cover several "Sea Dogs" of the era, and haven't just concentrated on the well-known English heroes.
The period saw a transition in naval warfare, which in part was spurred on by the experiences of the men described in this book.I've therefore explored these changes in some detail, particulalry where they apply to gunnery. The way men like Hawkins and Drake embraced new gunnery doctrines was crucial to the explaination of why the English fleet managed to keep the SPanish Armada at bay, and lies behind the successes of the "Sea Dogs" in the Caribbean.
I hope you enjoy the little book, and above all, I hope it encourages you to delve deeper into a fascinating subject, and an absorbing historical period.
