Product Description

Product Description
The Italians were the junior partners of the Axis alliance in the European war, and although operating less capable aircraft than the Luftwaffe, the Regia Aeronautica and ANR (post the 1943 surrender) still produced 102 pilots who qualified as aces by scoring five or more kills. The majority of these individuals scored their kills in 1941-2 during the bitter aerial battles over Malta and the Mediterranean convoys, and in support of Axis offensives in North Africa. Flying aircraft such as the Macchi 200-202, Fiat G.50 and biplane Fiat CR.42, the Italian fighter pilots were recognized by their Allied counterparts as brave opponents blessed with sound flying abilities, but employing under-gunned and under-powered equipment. Following the Italian surrender in September 1943, a number of aces continued to take the fight to the Allies as part of the Luftwaffe-run ANR, which was equipped with far more potent equipment such as the Bf 109G, Macchi 205V and Fiat G.55 Flying these types, the handful of ANR squadrons continued to oppose Allied bombing raids on northern Italy until VE-Day. This volume outlines the exploits of the aces, including detailed biographies and listings. There are specially commissioned 1/72-scale drawings and archival photographs.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, easily read summary of a little known air arm., 22 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Like the other books of this series, this title provides excellent coverage of it's chosen subject. The Italian Air Force was a significant contribution to the Axis powers but it's aces are little known, especially when compared to the many aces of the luftwaffe.

The title comprises 3 main areas with an excellent colour plate section showing the camouflage and markings of a selection of aircraft used by the aces. The text begins with a summary of the origins of the Regia Aeronautica and with a history of the air war. The second section deals with the history of the fighter units, their areas of operation and equipment. The last section gives a brief biography of the more significant aces, sub-divided by the theater of operations where the majority ot their kills occured, together with a full list of all the aces. Finally there is a more detailed description of each of the coloured plates.

The one area that let's the title down in my opinion is the omission of a detailed performance list for the individual aircraft types used as these types may be unfamiliar to many readers although scale plans are provided.

This is an aexcellent title for wargamers, historians and modellers and for all with an interest in aviation in World War 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Italian vintage WW2 rifles for sale, never fired, dropped once., 24 Mar 2008
By Gisli Jokull Gislason "Jokull" (Iceland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Sadly this joke reflects the standard opinion of the Italian Army in World War 2. And it is very wrong. The truth is the Italians were a junior partner in the Axis Alliance and Italy didn't have the resources to fight a war Il Duce, Mussolini required them to fight. Badly led and seriously under equipped the Italian soldiers proved time and time again that they were not lacking in personal skill and courage.

This volume adresses the armed forces of the Regia Aeronautica, the Italian Air Force, excellently. The authors have extensive knowledge of their subject and present it well. You get to know the history of the Regia Aeronautica and its pilots very well and the book provides an insight into a field that very few English books touch on, let alone make it their subject.

In the book there are also a few wonderful colour plates of various aircraft, from the bi-plane CR.42 Falco to the Macchi C.205 Veltro a plane that could match the allied fighters but due to poor industrial capability was never available in sufficient numbers.

The book also includes the part of Italy's darkest past, when the country was split and the armed forces fought each others, some for the allies while far more remained loyal to the Germans.

Like the other reviewer I to am a modeler and found this a good source book, although I personally would have prefared the cover with the bi-plane as seen above, to see the true cover click on search inside and you will see the Macchi C.202 that is on the real cover.

This book comes with my recommendations to anyone interested in the subject and is a very complete book in my opinion.
