5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy update to a ground breaking book, 11 Sep 2002
The first edition of this book was ground breaking, showing how an understanding of history can be used to demonstrate the way in which the disipline of psychology is shaped by the social, political and intellectual contexts in which it has developed. This second edition expands on the original with additional chapters covering topics such as language, applied psychology, and religion. In addition, there is a new, more logical organisation; suggestions for further reading are updated; and there is a very useful glossary. The first edition was required reading for all psychologists, and this one is even more so. The one let down is that the new "student friendly" visual design (imposed, no doubt, by the publisher) seems to make the book look less distinguished than it is somehow.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book.!, 29 Jul 2004
By albeth "albeth" (Warrington, UK) - See all my reviews
This is an original and highly illuminating critical history of Psychology. I have not come across anything as readable. The author combines scholarship with a knack for raising interesting, awkward questions that are often glossed over in more conventional presentations of the field. The book contains both general material on theoretical and philosophical issue as well as dealing with a variety of specific topics of psychological investigation. Very useful references and sources for further study are provided. This should be required reading for all students of psychology.
