Product Description

Review

"Benedict le Vay has clearly had fun putting this guide together, and taken every opportunity to tease the Scots without mercy….He has an eye for the ludicrous, stamina for some pretty thorough research and enough of a sense of humour for this never to seem malicious….Eccentric Edinburgh also operates as a full working guidebook to the Scottish capital." --Sunday Times

"His affection for the city (is) obvious throughout....One of the strengths of this book is that it doesn t simply concentrate on the many aspects of Edinburgh that have been done to death and beyond, in hundreds of guides over hundreds of years....Ben le Vay...has excelled himself this time." --Daily Mail

"It reveals fascinating facts about local icons…..it also includes some serious practical information and a full index." --Britain Calling

Product Description

'You don't just visit Edinburgh; you fall in love with the place'. The best-selling author of "Eccentric Britain" takes you away from the obvious tartanalia and into Auld Reekie's hidden corners to find spooky stories, weird buildings, mad judges and strange customs. Benedict le Vay also asks the pressing questions that others avoid: Is the Scottish Parliament a monumental cock-up? Was the Stewart dynasty really useless? Should you eat deep-fried Mars Bars?

4.0 out of 5 stars More of a guide book, 12 Sep 2006
By Bernard Lewis (Aussie living in Britain) - See all my reviews
Slightly misleading title: Although there are some eccentrics in here, it's more of a general guide book and a good one at that. Some lyrical writing - eg about the Borders - and outspoken and incisive overview of Scottish history. I like the pocket sized format and useful maps, but then I adore Edinburgh so anything I can get like this is a bonus. I hope to try to days out from Ediunburgh selection but always get bogged down in the city itself. Water of Lieth walk was good tho'
