Product Description

Product Description

The most westerly point of Argyll, Islay and Jura occupy a special place in Scotland's history, home to MacDonald, 'Lords of the Isles', as well as to the famous blend of Bowmore's Whisky Distillery. The fields and hills hold an abundance of wildlife, making it an ideal spot for farming, fishing and rambling, while its ruins speak of the impact of the nineteenth century's mass emigration and the clearances. Lord George Robertson brings his perceptive eye and lens to these different aspects of two of Scotland's most beautiful islands. This book forms part of a new series of images of Scotland's most beautiful scenery taken by some of its finest photographers. These books are not simply pictures of what we can see from our car window, nor simply misty landscapes but photography which gets to the heart of both the landscape and its human component. While covering all the main attractions in an area the photographers have sought out the quirky, the curious and the unknown to give a new dimension to a land we all thought we knew.

About the Author

He has had a distinguished political career, starting out as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Social Services, and taking on various roles including Defence Secretary of the United Kingdom, Secretary General of NATO and a member of Her Majesty's Privy Council.

2.0 out of 5 stars sunny islands, heavy-weather snaps, 23 May 2007
By Lulubeth (Lanarkshire) - See all my reviews
When there are so many things to commend these beautiful and remote Scottish islands, so few books of pictures of the extraordinary range of flora, fauna and folk, it seems doubly disappointing that this little book should fail so roundly. The snaps are poorly lit, unimaginatively composed and, in this age of digital photography and immediate home-improvement of home photography, simply not good enough. The reproduction is in part to blame, but the underlighting is consistent and simply not representative of much. Some would make ok postcards from a generic "Scotland" but Islay and Jura as shown here simply do not dazzle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Anon, 12 Oct 2007
This is a wonderful series of evocative photographs that capture the beauty and tranquility of these remarkable islands. It is amazing that they are taken by a politician who is an amateur at photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Majestic islands, captured brilliantly, 18 Aug 2007
By The Critic "Anon." (Edinburgh, UK) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent collection of well-composed pictures, which effectively capture the majesty of these islands and the character of the people who bring them to life.
