'...meticulously researched...' - Independent

Product Description

THIS IS THE story of a Scottish island as it has never been told before. While many books on the Hebrides are a litany of agricultural statistics and population movements, this is the story of the landlords, tacksmen, cottars and others who actually lived on or visited the island of Mull. It is based on research into a vast archive of rarely seen or previously unknown documents, particularly the original correspondence of the principal families, Macleans and Maclaines. In this book Jo Currie relates how the emigration that led to the disappearance of most of the island's native population during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries did not follow the pattern of clearance seen in other parts of the country. It was instead caused by the long deterioration in relationships between the gentry, the 'half gentry' and commoners and the inexorable forces of economic change during these centuries. This is the first serious history ever written of one of the most beautiful and most visited of Hebridean islands and is the product of fifteen years' research. It is lavishly illustrated with a wealth of previously unpublished pictures. The result is one of the most important books on Hebridean history yet written, told throughout with humour and masterful characterisation.

5.0 out of 5 stars An informative and enjoyable read, 29 April 2002
By A Customer
As a frequent traveller to the Isle of Mull, I was a bit sceptical on buying this book at the Tobermory bookshop last Hogmanay: Would a local history book of that volume keep my interest for a while, or will I put it on the shelves having read the first couple of pages? I never put it down till the end, although I'm not personally related to the island or it's Clans. Jo Currie manages to tell significant chapters of the Mull history in a captivating manner. The various local Clans' family histories and key Clansmen (and women) are skillfully revived and cross-referenced in a way the reader finds quite easy to keep track with even if not intimate with local history. This book could almost go for a novel in a 17/18th century west Scotland island setting if it weren't for the many facts and sources the author quotes. Altogether a very informative and enjoyable read that will make me look differently at many places on my next visit to Mull.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for genealogy research involving Isle of Mull, 24 Dec 2000
By triage4077@aol.com (Massachusetts, United States) - See all my reviews
I had purchased this book in the hope my family might be mentioned and therefore I would glean more information about their lives and how they lived those many years agao. My family is not mentioned by name; however that does not matter. The information included, the way in which it is presented, and the details that are given make this book a treasured resource in my efforts to understand the lives of my ancestors.
