Product Description

Product Description

In the early 1700s, the Socttish parliament set out to establish a colony in America in defiance of the King and the hostility of the English. Three years later the enterprise collapsed at the cost of 2000 men and half the wealth of Scotland. This is an account of the disaster.

4.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking tale of avarice, treachery and tragedy, 15 Nov 2000
One of those history books that makes you wonder why anyone writes fiction. Prebble brings alive the charachters and as in "Culloden" and "Glencoe" does not spare any of them. Another similarity with his other work on Scottish History is that it is scrupulously fair in respect of attempts by other Scots to blame the English for everything that ever happened to them. It would be improved by some better Maps and diagrams and perhaps some pictures of the protaganists. Nevertheless its an excellent and illuminating read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for the SNP, 7 Mar 2009

Anyone who aspires to Scottish Independance should read this book...and then reflect on the recent collapse of the Scottish Banks. History does repeat itself sadly. This is not a political statement on my part, just an observation. Twice in our history we've been baled out of financial ruin by our larger, richer Southern neighbour after the madness of a few individuals with dreams of world domination came crashing around our ears. This book charts the first such bale out in the disaster that was Darien. Interestingly, I have visited Darien recently and there are lots of people there with Scots names. Maybe we did leave some kind of legacy after all. A must read book that explains a great deal about the Scots character even in modern times.
