1.0 out of 5 stars a quick buck publication - save your money, 8 Feb 2004
By A Customer
I bought this thinking it would give an insider's view of gay Barcelona but it does nothing of the kind and reads as though it could easily have been cribbed from other guides. Shame on you AA publications. Just because there is a pink pound shouldn't mean you can pump this sort of trivia out.

Save your money and buy the excellent Time Out guide instead which not only gives you a great guide to scene and non-scene Barcelona, but also covers pretty much every other aspect of life for those of us not defined solely by our orientation.

While you're at it - get John Hooper's excellent book about the Spanish: The New Spaniards if you'd like an insight into the people of Spain. After all - they're the real reason we go there aren't they ?

I found this a fairly good and more importantly, portable guide for a recent holiday in Sitges. We were more interested in the Sitges part as that's where we were staying, but used the Barcelona listings (which accounts for about 75% of the book) for our day trips into the city. As a way of prioritising our activities in Barcelona the guide was quite useful, and it pointed out a few great restaurants & bars that we probably wouldn't have found without it, both in Barcelona and Sitges. However, I do have a few criticisms:

1. The hours listed for bars and clubs were not very accurate, at least in Barcelona. This book may list the hours during peak season (late May to early Sept), but for those who visit outside the Season, you can't rely on those times.

2. The maps were pretty basic, and too many streets were missing which were referred to elsewhere in the listings. For instance, the highest-recommended restaurant in Sitges was on a street that was indicated but not listed on the map: we found it by mistake during an after-dinner walk on our last night. Sadly, too late to give it a try.

Yes, the recommendations for places proved pretty accurate (apart from the opening hours), and as I said the guide is a good size for carrying around. But personally, I'm likely to go back to buying Time Out cityguides next time even if their listings aren't all gay-slanted.
