5.0 out of 5 stars The best Warhammer novel there is., 28 Dec 2003
By Ian Tapley "thefragrantwookiee" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
THE STORY:
A brash young Imperial noble, a vampire girl and a fellowship of rogues and heroes undertake a quest to destroy the evil sorcerer Drachenfels. Twenty five years later that noble hires the genius playwrite Detlef Sierck to write and stage a reconstruction of the adventure in Castle Drachenfels itself.

WHAT'S GOOD:
I wasn't expecting much when I started reading this book, Warhammer novels tend to be all blood and guts and little depth. I was very pleasantly surprised, however, to find myself reading a novel of subtlety and humour (as well as blood and guts!). The characters are all well realised, being perfectly believable in their vanities and fears, and the description of Drachenfels Castle was so evocative and delightfully gothic that for a moment I thought I was reading Bram Stoker's masterpiece. Another excellent element to this book is that you always think you know where the story is going next, but then Yeovil twists things right back on you and takes you by surprise. Finally, I'd like to say that, despite my premonitions of a cheap B-movie sorcerer, Drachenfels turned out to be a genuinely chilling villain of fearsome power.

WHAT'S BAD:
Nothing stands out as being particularly wrong with this book. The gore and entrails is a bit overdone in places, but as I say, that's standard for a Warhammer book. Also, I managed to predict the final twist about a chapter in advance (see if you can too).

An unmissable read for fans of Warhammer or simply lovers of gothic fantasy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amusing and entertaining, 3 Jan 2002
By A Customer
A highly entertaining read! Although published by UK gaming giant Games Workshop, Drachenfels manages to avoid many of the high clichés associated with books of a similar vein (it manages to poke fun at most of them at some stage or other). Very amusing and easy to read the characters still mange to exude a kind of life. Dark when needed and not to straight faced the rest of the time. Well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best warhammer novel by a mile, 5 Jul 2004
A Brilliant story really well written. It keeps you guessing until the end.

Many of the warhammer books are only of interest to fans of warhammer, this book, however, is brilliant and can be enjoyed by everyone.

I cannot recomend it enough. It is a brilliant fantasy story, but unlike many other fantasies, it only has a few hundred pages and you won't get bogged down over 600 pages and then have to buy the next 5 installments. You can just pick this up, get into it straight away, enjoy it immensely, and then move onto a new book

4.0 out of 5 stars A very different read for me!

I read this as part of the bumper volume 'Genevieve'. I mistakenly purchased that book thinking it was one long novel, as I don't normally read books containing more than... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best Warhammer novel...
Despite the atrocious cover art, this is a gem of a novel. Witty, clever, yet managing to evoke feelings of horror too. Read more
