With a Charles Stross book, you always get more than you expect. With a collection of his short stories, I think that's even more true. Although some of the stories in this book have appeared elsewhere, it's still, word for word, excellent value. The stories range across themes - from Cold War metaphors and ideas in Missile gap and A Colder War, with some prefiguring of Stross's later Laundry stories, which are my personal favourites from his extensive output and others exploring wider themes. Best of all, I think, is the longer story Palimpset, which perhaps has that classically Strossian "what the blazes is going on?" atmosphere to a greater degree than the rest - perhaps because it is longer: the brew takes a little time and space to develop, maybe?

Overall - excellent.

Charlie Stross tells us in his introduction that short stories allow a faster feedback from the public than the protracted timescales involved in a novel, so here's mine. Although I have read some of these stories before, I really enjoyed having them all together in this anthology along with new stories such as Palimpsest. The usual Stross trademarks are all there - wit, intelligence and ideas that can make your head spin - all packed down tight into little nuggets of pure story. Fans of The Laundry books along with all those who just enjoy his highly intelligent writing will not be disappointed. So, Charlie, message received loud and clear and yes, we're out there!

I'm a massive fan of Charles Stross after discovering his wonderful two 'Laundry' novels 'The Atrocity Archive' and 'The Jennifer Morgue' where mathematicians and computer geeks are employed by the British Civil Service have to play James Bond against Lovecraftian occult threats to the state.

Repeatedly Stross throws out ideas that can leave your head spinning, such as in 'Accelerando' with its depiction of technological singularities.

Here we have all sorts. There's a Laundry short story, a post-human version of Jeeves and Wooster set on Mars, American hackers fighting a ban on the free use of the Internet and one of his best ever stories, 'A Colder War' where the American/Russian proxy war in Afghanistan is somewhat complicated by the USSR's use of shoggoths and the Iraqi's determination to unleash Yog-Sothoth.

This book is a great place to start for one of the UK's most talented and entertaining SF writers.

Stross rewrites a time travel trope and does so brilliantly.
