Review

'[An] engrossing dark fantasy debut ... The resolution of this ingeniously multilayered tale will satisfy fans of both fantasy and detective fiction... Castor's wisecracking cleverness in the face of weird nemeses makes him the perfect hardboiled hero for a new supernatural noir series.' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (starred review) 'You'll be up all night finishing this one.' - Richard Morgan 'Fast, fun and furious, worth it for the final joke alone.' - THE GUARDIAN 'Witty, deadpan and shudderingly noir ... Carey drives this thriller like Chandler at the wheel of a runaway hearse' - DAILY EXPRESS 'Entertaining, well-paced, intelligently plotted and full of memorable characters' - THE TIMES 'A stunning supernatural thriller ... here, I guarantee, is one of the best books you'll read this year!' - SF REVU.COM 'Simply brilliant novels ... One of the best books series around right now' - Forbidden Planet International

Product Description

Old ghosts of different kinds come back to haunt Fix, in the fourth gripping Felix Castor novel. Names and faces he thought he'd left behind in Liverpool resurface in London, bringing Castor far more trouble than he'd anticipated. Childhood memories, family traumas, sins old and new, and a council estate that was meant to be a modern utopia until it turned into something like hell ...these are just some of the sticks life uses to beat Felix Castor with as things go from bad to worse for London's favourite freelance exorcist. See, Castor's stepped over the line this time, and he knows he'll have to pay; the only question is: how much? Not the best of times, then, for an unwelcome confrontation with his holier-than-thou brother, Matthew. And just when he thinks things can't possibly get any worse, along comes Father Gwillam and the Anathemata. Oh joy ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Continuing saga or cracking read?, 20 Mar 2009
By Mark Treacher (Gloucestershire, England) - See all my reviews
This is the fourth in the Felix Castor series and I began reading with that feeling you get from any continuing story. After the first couple of chapters I got into the swing of things and began to thoroughly enjoy the read.

This novel builds on the previous ones and neatly brings together a lot of threads. I found this a compulsive read and couldn't put it down. Well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy them please, 19 Jun 2009
I love Mike Carey's work. From Hellblazer, to Lucifer to Crossing Midnight and the Castor books, there is a depth of quality and realism allowing the reader to feel involved - something that is growing increasingly rare in this Dan Brown heavy world.

Castor is his ultimate creation. Fair enough - he's a bit of a John Constantine rip-off but I'll let him off.

In this story we learn more about Castor's family life and specifically the rift between him and his brother. Great humour, darkness and tragedy, much like a less absorbed Neil Gaiman. In fact that is potentially where the major difference occurs - Carey is able to convey the modern world more succintly whilst Gaiman is firmly routed in the weird.

The only downside is the mini-cliffhanger - which I expect now to continue throughout the series.
