Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

David Farland's "Runelords" fantasy sequence began in 1998 with The Sum of All Men, a career-relaunch novel whose sales far outstripped earlier SF published under his real name Dave Wolverton. Runelords are supermen whose strength, stamina, vision, etc. are multiplied by magical "endowments" transferred from unfortunate donors who are crippled by their loss: the arch-villain is virtually invincible thanks to tens of thousands of endowments. This second book avoids middle-volume doldrums by introducing a vast onslaught of still tougher and memorably unpleasant non-humans which even the villains must oppose. Meanwhile various characters skirmish in different parts of the map, and the hero struggles with unreliable powers conferred on him when he was chosen as Earth King to save the land and humanity--or maybe only a tiny part of each.

Farland maintains a steady flow of new situations, reversals, gambits and surprises...it's a real shock when one chap who has incurred a dreadful penalty for virtuous reasons is not spared (as expected in the normal chivalry of fantasyland) but pays the full, eye-watering price. One small criticism: the writing contains occasional sloppiness and repetition that a copyeditor should have removed. It's still a rousing, painfully gripping story. --David Langford --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

'The Runelords is a first rate tale, an epic fantasy that more than delivers on its promise. Read it soon and treat yourself to an adventure you won't forget.' Terry Brooks

2.0 out of 5 stars Downward spiral, 9 Feb 2009
I had high hopes for this book, as the first installment had some fresh and original ideas combined with a solid story; I thought it was set to become something quite special.
Unfortunately it all just seemed to fall flat.
Farland takes his concept of 'supermen' with 'endowments' from other people quite a few steps too far. Even an imagined world, with magic systems, beliefs, mythology etc. needs boundaries, and that is distinctly lacking here. Conflicts become incredibly one-sided and, frankly, a little boring. the 'bad guy' Raj Ahten is just too invincible; at moments it just all feels a little...silly!
Also the direction Farland takes his 'hero' Gaborn (with the very interesting concept of 'Earth King' set up so well in book 1) is also, dare i say it, boring as well, with Gaborn becomming a somewhat annoying, indecisive, dithering wimp. Not good for the 'hero,' although there may be some kind of character arc going on here. Neverthelss, for the duration of this book Gaborn becomes less and less interesting throughout.
On top of this the prose becomes wordier and more self-indulgent, leaving me with the feeling that it needs a good 'edit.'
All in all very dissapointing after the great 'set-up' of book 1. I was expecting so much more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, 11 Sep 2000
By A Customer
I read this book in 5 days time. Very hard to put down.

Many fantasy writers bring nothing new to the fantasy genre. Farland comes with something completely new - In this fantasy world it is possible to give a person's endowments (sight, metabolism, brawn, wit etc...) to another.

Farland takes this new ability and builds a world around it.

In my perception it is this innovativeness (I hope that is correct english) that distinguishes the good writers from the 'not so good'.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent development of original idea, 5 May 1999
By A Customer
The first book of the series showed an author who had a lot of good new ideas and a thorough grasp of the internal logic involved. This second book continues to develop the ideas and at the same time provides a gripping and entertaining read.Thoroughly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars complicated
I enjoyed this book but was a little confused by the title. The previous book was about the coming of the Earth King so I thought the wolves in question would be animals. Read more

This is the second book in the series, which is roughly divided into two parts, the first four parts with Gaborn and the later parts, picking up with Gaborn's son. Read more
