I have read all of Shaun Hutson's books and have liked them all BUT this one is the first one I just couldn't put down until I had read it from cover to cover. Action is virtually on every page - A FIRST CLASS READ. This is the first time I have felt so positive about a book that I have left a review.

The action throughout is unrelenting. The information about the weapons used and their capability adds to the discriptions. A story of determinism in the face of impossible odds. As good as Warhol's prophecy and almost on par with Compulsion.

I've read all of Hutson's books and as usual I pre-ordered this one months ago. His later ones are a bit hit'n'miss and I think this is a close miss, it had potential and a few years ago Hutson would have nailed it.

Again we have the short chapters and a relatively short book (large typeface and short chapters means lots of pages). As a result, the character development is practically non existent, a minor inconvenience that gets in the way of the plot. You really couldn't care less what happened to the other characters.

Much of the book is taken up by the main theme (odd thing to say, but you'll see what I mean), I can't say what due to spoilers, but taking up most of the book, the running, fighting and killing gets old pretty quickly. The main character is obviously super-human.

The finale hits you like a defrosted chicken, I was waiting for a twist, there isn't one, the end is pathetic really.

I think Hutson has lost his edge and is stuck in a rut churning thriller books out rather than classic horror books. It may be time for me to stop reading Hutson and browse the horror shelves.
