Review

'Because I read a lot of fantasy books and books in general, I am seldom taken by surprise by a plot turn. When I read Myrren's Gift, I thought I could predict where this tale was doing. Blood and Memory proved me wrong. Fiona McIntosh's books move quickly and unpredictably; if you are tired of plodding trilogies in which little seems to happen, these books are definitely for you.' ROBIN HOBB.

Product Description

The machinations of King Celimus have robbed Wyl Thirsk of almost everyone he held dear, and those few who have survived will bear the scars forever. Myrren's gift offers Wyl the opportunity to strike back, but at what price? His best friend is murdered, mercenaries pillage the land in the name of his beloved Legion, and now the mad king threatens the two women who are more precious to him than life itself. He cannot save both. The old seer's advice comes back to him: find the Manwitch. Only Myrren's natural father can help break the hold of the Quickening. But Wyl's heart pleads otherwise: protect your loved ones. Once again, it seems, Wyl Thirsk faces an impossible choice. The path ahead diverges. Left and right. Head and heart. Blood and memory. A misstep here could cost him everything...

4.0 out of 5 stars Novel fantasy - pacy and well written, 6 Aug 2005
By A Customer
I bought Myrren's Gift, the first book, expecting the usual fantasy characters, quest etc etc but was genuinely surprised and delighted to find such a unique novel. The main premise (albeit perhaps borrowed a little bit from TV's Quantum Leap) is given a neat twist and becomes quite enthralling as the hero Wyl battles in various guises to save his country and, most importantly, those he cares about from a twisted king. This novel builds on the politics and treachery of the first book and you find yourself hoping that Wyl gets a break from his continued heartache - a good sign that the author has succeeded in really making you care about the fate of the main characters. Of course being the middle book of a trilogy only more despair is piled upon our hero and the ending really sets you up for a cracking conclusion (roll on December and book 3!). I look forward to reading much more from Ms McIntosh, she is indeed a worthy successor to Robin Hobb (who she credits in this book as being an inspiration). If you are looking for something just a bit out of the ordinary I would highly recommend this series.

2.0 out of 5 stars First Book Great.............. Shame about the second, 9 Nov 2006
By Mr. C. J. Howard "Chris" (South Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first book in this 'quickening' trilogy was so refreshing and different as a fantasy novel that I read the book within a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. As you can imagine I was compelled to buy the second book 'Blood and Memory'in the series as quickly as I could so I could get my teeth back into the story. In all honesty I was extremely disappointed and some what bored by the end.

There was simply no expanse on the world that Fiona McIntosh had created and the basic story from the first book did not change throughout the whole second book. There is an Evil King that is basically a nasty piece of work, and Wyl Thirsk wants revenge and fails at every attempt to save his loved ones and destroy the tyrant. He does however move from body to body in the process thanks to the 'Gift'. In some parts it seemed to me that Fiona McIntosh was writing blind and and had written the book chapter after chapter with no real concept of where it was all going by the end. This was made apparent by the end of the book when Myriens father appeared in the novel and he didnt have a clue how the 'Gift' worked, yet he was the one who passed it on to Myrien ???

In my eyes there needed to be more spice added to the story, and a few more exciting characters thrown in to make up a recipe for success. I just think Fiona McIntosh had a fantastic idea with the 'gift' concept and then played on it throughout the whole first and second book. It was all a little one dimensional in my eyes.

I will attempt to read the final book in the trilogy 'Bridge of Souls' but I wont hold my breath. It just seemed that this 'quickening' trilogy could have been written in two books and made much more enthralling and exciting and not dragged on over three. I am sorry Fiona but I am still yet to find a modern fantasy novelist to rival Raymond E Feist and David Gemmell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Encore! Bravo!, 19 Jul 2005

More, please Ms. McIntosh!

This is the second instalment of The Quickening which started off in Myrren's Gift.

Young Wyl is on the run, in a new guise, because of Myrren's Gift (or is it curse) and Celimus is desperate to lay his grubby paws on the last of the Thirsks...

It grabs you on page one and doesn't let go. I laughed, I cried, I watched in amazement and horror as events unfolded. Train journeys home in the evenings went faster than ever. This is unfortunately one of those "one more chapter" books...and you aren't satisfied with just "one more" - you want it all.

It is written with great skill, sensitively, great flair. Even though it is a fantasy novel, you never for a moment doubt the characters, their situations and the setting. The setting is medieval, and Ms McIntosh definitely did her research about how things worked back then, which helped her bring across the atmosphere of the place and people.

A genuinely good read. But, unfortunately, we have to wait till December for the last one...

However, more is on the way from her. I know a publisher/agent bought the rights to publish her other books here in the UK which she had already written, so it is going to be good fun.

Ranks there, without a doubt in my mind, with Robin Hobb.
