Praise for the Saga of Recluce: 'Modesitt creates a deeper and more intricate world with each volume' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY 'An intriguing fantasy in a fascinating world' Robert Jordan on THE MAGIC OF RECLUCE

Product Description

A magical calamity spread a dark age across the planet, leaving Corea a divided, warring world where kingdoms fight and people live amongst supernatural beings and bizarre animals. A few rare humans have Talent, the ability to use magical powers, and are thus either cursed or blessed. Alucius is one of the most Talented of all, and is now rising quickly through the ranks of the Iron Valleys Militia. He has to have all his wits about him to survive in a complex political landscape, having spent his childhood on an isolated nightsheep ranch. He must stretch his Talent and military skill to their limits, as he battles to keep himself and his men alive in a a fierce border war, while the greatest evil yet awaits him where he least expects to find it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel, 7 Sep 2003
By M. E. Cooper "Fantasybooks" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Alucius, once a prisoner of the Matrites, is now back among friends--but some of his "friends" seem worse than the enemy! When it is time to return to his men after a month long furlough with his family, Alucius is attacked by assassins. He survives, but this is just the first of many situations where he is put in harm's way. He becomes convinced that he has a powerful enemy among the Iron Valley Council, but he doesn't know who it is or why he is hated.

When the Iron Valley is taken over by the Lonachronans, Captain Alucius is assigned an impossible seeming mission far from Iron Valleys and his family. There he is betrayed when his "allies" flee leaving him to hold against overwhelming numbers of nomads.

This book is well worth your time. An excellent sequel to Legacies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Corean Chronicles Continue, 26 Jun 2004
By J. Glen "Jeanette Glen" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
L. E. Modesitt has with this book given yet more proof (if any were needed) that he is one of the most entertaining fantasy writers around. Corean Chronicles is a worthy successor to The Saga of Recluce, The Spellsong Cycle and so on.

In Alucius we have a hero who is slowly coming into his powers and realising that his life is going to be vastly different from the one he envisioned as a child. His world is one where technology, the supernatural and magic are so intertwined that it is not possible to say where one stops and the other(s) start.

His wife Wendra is also starting to learn that she also has Talent and is learning how to use it, there is a steadily strengthening physic bond between them that adds to the depth of their personal story. Alucius and Wendra have (hopefully) a long journey in front of them as they both continue not only to learn about their separate powers and how to use them, but also what fate destiny holds for them.

The signs are that Alucius will not end his days as a humble herder of nightsheep but that tale remains to be told. I for one look forward to reading the next instalment of this entertaining fantasy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so good as the first one!, 11 Jun 2004
By A Customer
The first volume of this series introduced us to the main characters (including Modessit's typical heroic figure), the main concepts and the world that the adventures would be set in - I quite enjoyed the first book. In this second volume we learn more about the world and gradually about the underlying 'problem' that is generating the adventures that the hero finds himself in.

Like the first novel, there is a military aspect to it - with battles (and magic) but this time more definite 'baddies' to match against our heroic 'goody' (sorry about the kiddie language, I am spending 'too' much time with my children!).

For all that though - I get the feeling that this book is largely a 'space filler'; clearly we are going to have (at least) volume 3 and reading this book may well be the 'price' we have to pay to understand it.

It wasn't a bad book - just not a particularly good one. I felt that Modessit made a much better job of the soldier/mage hero in the Magi of Cyador/Scian of Cyador books.

I'll look forward to volume 3 of this series - but not with the same anticipation that I waited for this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pretty good second installment for the Corean Chronicles
Unlike the first book this book doesn't hang around getting to known the world or the charaters. Instead you get dropped right into the story with an attempt on Alucius life. Read more
