Product Description

Product Description
Fighting crime in magical Turai is a very tricky business if you don't know what you're doing. Thankfully, private investigator Thraxas never has this problem (according to Thraxas). Winter is coming to Turai, and Thraxas is in a bad mood. But it's going to get a whole heap worse because the orcs are coming too. Thraxas was a hero of the last Orc War (according to Thraxas). That was some years ago, however, and this time he would much prefer to keep his head down - preferably buried in a big steak pie. Unfortunately, when a senior member of the War Council is murdered by a cake, there's only one private investigator in line for the job. For some reason, it was a very short line.

About the Author
Martin Millar wrote some of the best urban fiction of the late 1980s/early 1990s. Now, under the name of Martin Scott he has, as The Guardian puts it, 'invented a new genre: pulp fantasy noir'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thraxus is in it deep!!!, 20 Nov 2003
Martin Scott's books always zing along. Thraxus is such an unlikely hero, a touch of Sam Spade, a whiff of Rincewind but mostly an original. His appetites are as enormous as his attitudes (anyone expecting political correctness had better not start reading these books) and he romps through each adventure with breathtaking verve and outrageous wit. This book charts Thraxus' attempts to solve the murder of one of the city-state of Turai's more important politicians (by pastry - of all things)set against a background of an imminent invasion by the Orc nations. Thaxus' companions are a delightfully drawn motley-crew ranging from the cities chief sorceress through a merciless female assasin to a half human, quarter orc, quarter elf ex-gladiator with a taste for chainmail bikinis. Things never, ever go well for Thraxus but this time they couldn't get much worse!

5.0 out of 5 stars A hero to remember!, 8 Dec 2003
"Thraxas at war" is the newest highlight in the Thraxas-series of wonderfully witty Martin Scott. Overweight, old-fashioned, always broke and always grumpy, the private investigator seems to have finally come to an all-time low in this story. War against the Orcs seems to be just a few days away - but the politicians of Turai, the city-state where Thraxas tries to earn his beer, stew and beer, are endlessly discussing instead of acting. As in the other Thraxas-books, also this time Thraxas is up against the establishment as well as his own character-flaws - and of course against hot-blooded Makri, his side-kick and one of the most beautiful half-elf/half-orc women in the whole of literature. When one of Turai's highest-ranking politicians is killed by a poisoned pastry right in front of Thraxas' eyes, the ex-warrior and PI just has to start to go after the truth - and gets more than a mouthful of it ... I don't want to give away the plot, therefore I'll just urge you to read this as well as all other Thraxas-books (they get better and better!) and give you my strongest recommendation for one of the most unusual and most funny fantasy-novels of recent history. Thraxas rules!

4.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Thraxas - in trouble again, 6 Feb 2004

This series sustains the quality of writing very well - Thraxas character is fleshed out (in more ways than one) as are his friends old and new in this entertaining romp. With a trumped-up charge of cowardice in battle hanging over him combined with Thraxas' inability to relate with his friends or stay sober seem set to doom him as the Evil Hordes apporach, but the plot twists most agreeably, and Thraxas basic competence and decency helps save the day once again.
