5.0 out of 5 stars Just a damn good read., 28 Nov 2003
By Mr. A. J. D. White - See all my reviews

Having read Mr Clemens 1st novel Wit'ch Fire, I eagerly anticiptaed the arrival of book 2. All I can say is that it lived upto my expectations and more.

The writting continues to be in a "light" fantasy style, very graphic and passes the eyes with ease, the closest authors I can think to compare it to are David and Liegh Eddings. However he continues to weave some of the darkest fantasy going into his writting, this still feels slighty awkward but its not a problem.

I just love the ill'guard, (just the name itself is a work of simple brilliance imho) the way they are descibed gives a real feel of relentless twisting evil. I also like the way soul struggle is done (don't want to say to much more as it might spoil the novel). Basicaly the ill'guard are wonderfully concieved and I can't wait to find out more about them.

As for the Black Heart (evil overlord), I am going to give a reference I hate to give.... the presence of BH reminds me of Sauron from Tolkiens Middle Earth, the feeling that the characters are scurrying about trying to hide from the evil menace that can reach out and affect their lives. I hate to use the Tolkien referance because its something that is used so often in fantasy that it is almost without meaning.

I think that Mr Clemens is well on his way to earning a place on the must buy list of authors. This novel is not without its niggles, however those niggles are fairly minor. At times the mixture of light and dark fantasy turn to cheese ( 'storm) at others I could almost feel him struggling to find a path between light and dark. However I don't think these are exactly faults, its just part of writting how he writes brilliantly.

Anyway I am off to start number 3 and hopefully find out more about the ill'guard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!!, 6 Nov 2005

So good, much better than the first! New characters introduced all the way through, but still keeping the original characters so there are many different story lines to keep you gripped! Twists and turns as well that aren't what you expect! I really enjoyed this book, and I found Elena much less annoying in it than in the first, as she accepts being a witch more and uses her magic a lot more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Continues the excitement and adventure of the first book!, 6 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I read this book in one sitting. A wonderful second book inthe trilogy. I was happy to meet the new characters and enjoyed every page. Elena does seem to need a more developed personality but she is still very young and her uncertainty then confidence is congruent with that development. I was gratified to see some strong, mature female characters added in this book. Tol'chuk is still one of my favorites. Still a trilogy with wonderful characters cast in shades of grey with action, adventure and suspense. A rich fantasy novel! I anticipate 'Witch War, the climactic conclusion, with bated breath.
