5.0 out of 5 stars Curiouser and curiouser, 9 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Pardon the Alice in Wonderland reference above, but Wizard's Funeral really is a curious and wonderful book indeed. The first book of the series had me intrigued me enough to read this, the second book of the Red Pavillons. (I shan't bother to give you a summary as you can read that elsewhere on the page.) Wizard's Funeral is even better than Knight's Dawn. These books are a curious - that word again - blend of almost whimsical magery and frightning gore. I was reminded of those hideous tales that lie behind classic fairy stories . . . you know, the unsanitised tales of rape, incest and murder that make up the real Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel et al. Wizard's Funeral is a real page turner, it is refreshingly different from any other fantasy I've read in many a while, and I can't wait for book three!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Journey, 16 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This book is a wonderful journey into the exotic and mysterious world in which Soldier finds himself. The second of three novels Wizard's Funeral deals with the African-like continent opposite the land ruled by the city state of Zamerkand, where nomads and desert dwellers rule, where winged lions fill the skies and where Death stalks, makes pacts and breaks them, and where Soldier's mortal enemy from his previous life is searching to kill him. A rich and and evocative fantasy which I enjoyed immensely. Do not be seduced into thinking this is a Tolkienian elf quest or you will be disappointed, as it seems some are by two other reviews. This is raw magical fantasy of the folk lore kind and one should not judge it by Tolkien type works. More it should be compared to mid-european stories such as Tales of the Alhamabra by Washington Irving.

I thought this was a terrific novel, full of inventiveness, though not in the normal high fantasy style, which is why it might not be well-received by fantasy readers who want the... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Dear, oh dear, oh dear.
This is formulaic writing at its very worst. The 'Barbara Cartland' of fanatsy. The Characterisation is almost non-existant, the dialogue is wooden and altoghether risable. Read more
