4.0 out of 5 stars A Great way to start with Tom Holt, 30 Dec 2000
Being a real fantasy fan I took the Amazon recommendation and tried this author. Having never read any of his books before and being extremely hard to please, I took it as something as a challenge to see if this compilation of two of his books would entertain me. It's not the humour of Terry Pratchett or Robert Rankin; but then again it never claimed to be.

I found the plot of the first story, 'Flying Dutch', so funny I couldn't put it down. The humour is such that you can relate to it in everyday situations and gets you looking for the puzzles on the back of matchboxes. And the really great thing about having a two in one book, was that once that was finished I was able to dive head first into another great read. 'Faust among Equals' in my opinion was even better than the first; a direct hit on the funny bone with a serious giggle factor. Great characters, personalities, and most of all a plot that doesn't so much unfold, as spring out and poke you in the ribs and make you realise just what a funny 'ole world we really live in if only we stopped long enough to look, point and laugh at it.

Best to read when you're alone, unless you don't mind getting funny looks on the train when you sit laughing to yourself with tears running down your cheeks. Yes please, pass the next Tom Holt this way, I want more....

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny, 22 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Almost all Tom Holt's books are really funny and cleverly written. After a while, however, you begin to realise that they are mostly pretty similar. The rather self conscious writing is really very good but after you've read four or five of the books it becomes a bit repetitive. Even so, read some of his books - just not all!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Pro's and Con's of Tom Holt, 4 Sep 2006
By Chris Chalk "Chris" (Croydon, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Tom Holt does have a tendency to be a bit hit or miss and sometimes really does blur the line between fantasy comedy and nerdy tedium. This collection of two of his novels managed to follow that trend almost perfectly.

Dead Funny is a amalgamation of Faust Amongst Equals and The Flying Dutchman with (in my opinion) Faust Amongst Equals being the superior book. If I was rating them separately I would put 4 stars on Faust and 3 on the Dutchman, overall I would say the combination is a 3.4/5.

The books are easy to read, have smatterings of hilarity and at times are cleverly conceived. Both books however suffer with trying to get too clever with themselves and do become over elaborate but this is just the style of Tom Holt's writing - don't hold it against him.

If you have enjoyed his previous (or subsequent) novels, or for that matter enjoy Terry Pratchett's novels then I would recommend it. If you are a first time reader I would consider starting with The Portable Door, which gives you a good insight to where Holt's writing will take you.
