Lauren Child is so good it's exhilarating (The Independent )

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly worth It!, 18 May 2006
By Laura (London, UK United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is just brilliant you have to read it. I suggest if you like Utterly me Clarice Bean then buy this. I love the way it's written full of humour almost like Clarice's Diary packed with great illustrations. Clarice has heard about the school play the sound of music, she really wants to play the part of Lisel but she dosen't think Mrs Wilberton will let her. Her brother Kurt works in this vegetarian shop now and her best friend Betty Moody is playing the part of Louisa in the school play. There is this spelling bee on the same week as the school play and Clarice dosen't want to go. But she gets into trouble for Better or worse? BRILLIANT great for anyone age 7 and upwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, interesting and impressive, 20 Mar 2007

(REAL NAME)
I have just finished reading this to my daughter and I'm not sure which of us enjoyed it most. It is great fun to read out loud as the voices come off the page very clearly as the characters are extremely well drawn.

I was especially impressed by the authors ability to get inside the head of a primary age child. Clarice Bean is a very real child who is doing her best to figure out the sometimes complicated world she lives in. There are none of the black and white moral certainties that so many children's books are filled with i.e "Lying is always wrong", "Parents are always right".

The book ends with Clarice making a brave decision to do what SHE thinks is the right thing to do even though her parents and teachers would probably have disagreed with her decision.

This book made my six year old ask lots of good questions and more importantly think hard about some rather important things.

The bottom line however is that Clarice Bean is a great read, funny and thought provoking buy it and enjoy.

I really liked this book. It was funny and used a lot of good words which helps with your vocab. I read it twice in two days when I was on holiday because it was so good. Catherine aged 8.
