Product Description

Review
"Will win over readers in a second" Publishers Weekly "innovative illustrations and text" The Bookseller "A dolly mixture of typefaces, full of wonderfully dry one-liners" TES "Lauren Child is so good, it's exhilarating" The Independent

A winsomely beady-eyed rat yearns for a loving home in this rather odd feel-good offering. Living in "trash can number 3, Grubby Alley" isn't great at the best of times, but it's made even worse by the occasional emptying of his "belongings into a big truck." He lies awake wondering what it would be like to be a pet, explaining that "[m]ost of all I would like to have a name, instead of just that pesky rat." After imagining himself in the places of various friends who do have homes and weighing the pros and cons (Pierre the chinchilla, for instance, lives the high life in a plush apartment, but he also is subjected to weekly baths), the rat puts an ad for an owner in the window of a pet shop-with unexpected results. The typeface performs such wildly acrobatic feats across the page that it is occasionally difficult to find, let alone read, but by and large its expansions and contractions help in creating the rat's distinctive voice. Child's (What Planet Are You From, Clarice Bean, p. 177, etc.) mixed-media illustrations are as energetic as ever-the far-from-warm-and-fuzzy rat himself is outlined in black with an appropriately pointy snout, and his fur is rendered with photographic collages of real "fur"-but there's a certain tameness to the story. Readers may find themselves wondering if they want this delightfully spiky antihero to become just another house pet, but there is an undeniable appeal to his quest, and a twist at the end saves it from the treacle jar. 5.0 out of 5 stars Brown rat finds Love, 9 Aug 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: That Pesky Rat (Paperback)
"That Pesky Rat" is simply one of the funniest children's books I have read in ages - the story of a brown rat who lives in a bin but longs to be a pet with a name. The cameo appearances of his friends who have made it as pets (such as Pierre the Chinchilla who lives a glamourous life with Madame Fifi) are hysterical, and the finale of the book is a happy ending with a very funny twist! This is one book I won't mind reading to my children dozens of times - the illustrations are stylish and adults can enjoy the humour as much as (or even more than)the kids can!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic book full of funny pictures and wit, 9 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Thoroughly enjoyable, this book can work at many levels- a good laugh, a thought for all the pets out there, and a chance to reflect on the choices we can all make. Then there's the wonderful montages and drawings that make the book a pleasure for the eyes, one of my favourites being where the rat is thinking about how he hates to be bored...
I bought this as a supply teacher- it could form the basis of so many lessons and for so many age levels, and so many parts of the curriculum, but mainly for myself!
The main plot is a pesky rat who would like his own name, and to be someone's pet above all, even if it means having to wear a funny jumper. This is well worth paying hard back price for!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest books for kids, 29 Oct 2008
This review is from: That Pesky Rat (Paperback)
This is my favourite childrens book. It is very funny. The only downside of it that I laugh every time I read it out loud to my 5 year old who then demands that I explain exactly what is funny and why which kills it a bit!
